faab64 ,

I'm doing so much better than last year saving electricity.

Sadly my savings are insignificant in the horrible situation we are in.

5 minutes flight of a fighter jet generates more CO2 than I saved the whole year.

So why should I care when most people have either given up or simply don't bother caring for the #environment any more and they all are hell bent in the global arms race madness.

@faab64 Don't give up.

It's not a me problem, it's a we problem.

While global military spending is only about 5.5% of total carbon emissions, it's all connected. Climate change impacts make wars more likely. Oil companies ally with fascists. Christian nationalists support Israel's war crimes; why Biden does is sadly less clear (as it will cost him votes). Fascist petro-states start wars.

The most important thing is system change, not individual consumer choices. Integrity helps, but just as we can't individually stop the war in Gaza, we can't individually stop the continued expansion of the fossil fuel industry. Many of us have little choice but to drive, or heat our homes with fossil fuels.

But if we change the politics, we can make an impact on all of these things.

@faab64 Also, you only use 95kWh of electricity in a year? Wow. How do you heat (or cool) your home?

Month of February. Forgot to mention it

@faab64 Even so, that's pretty good. Individual action helps, it's just not enough, and often limited depending on privilege.

Well, I live in an apartment, alone, in south of France.

Cooking only on weekends and freeze the food for the week.

I shower most of the time at the city pool and when I shower at home, I turn the hot water on an hour before and then It's off.

Don't use heat, partially because it has been a warm February, and partially because I accepted the indoor temperature down to 15°C and wear warm clothes instead.

Plus all electricity at home is switched only when needed except the fridge/freezer that is A++ rating.

@faab64 Good lord...I use that every 12 hours... For point of reference, I run a home-based server setup (that includes my mastodon server) for work.. So yeah..there's that.

@faab64 Because there are a lot more middle class global north people than there are fighter jets. Defense is about 5.5% of total carbon emissions.

Sadly, the impacts of climate change probably make wars more likely.

Peace is important for its own sake. And individual militaries are huge sources of pollution.

But we also need to stop using fossil fuels to heat our homes - which requires government intervention, as many people cannot afford a heat pump at present.

But ultimately it's about system change, not individual consumer choices.

That includes the system of war. For instance unconditional US support for Israel while it commits horrific crimes must be stopped, not primarily because of the carbon emissions, but because of the people.
