@pluralistic Congrats on making "Die ZEIT" - it's the only print newspaper I still subscribe to. While I disagree with many stances, they have thought and substance to argue over.
@pluralistic I'm gonna explain the excellent German word choice of the Zeit article. Apologies if you already knew!
There's a German word "verschlimmbessern" meaning when you try to improve something but end up making it worse. Zeit did not use this word. Instead, they used "verschlimmscheißern", which translates as both making things worse and making things shit at the same time. It's great creative language use! Almost like that's their job or something.
A bit difficult to explain that word.¹ Mostly you encounter it in a question after someone was telling a incredulous story. "Du verscheißerst mich doch!?" ("You can't possibly tell the truth!?") The question is used to express disbelive in the uttersances of politicians, companies or other more powerful entities, too. It is mostly used between friends and family.
