This is interesting. I've long suspected city councilors and cops working together to narf on people they don't like, but putting manure in someone's mailbox is a level of pettiness I didn't expect.
In my town, the local anti-homeless councilor is always calling the state health department whenever he catches wind of a homeless outreach feeding event.
At long last, the San Francisco stop of the book tour for my new novel "The Bezzle" has been finalized: I'll be at the San Francisco Public Library Main Branch this Wednesday, March 13th, in conversation with Robin Sloan!

My ebooks and audiobooks (from Tor Books, Head of Zeus, McSweeneys, Beacon, Verso and others) are for sale all over the net, but I sell 'em too, and when you buy 'em from me, I earn twice as much and you get books with no DRM and no license "agreements."

@pluralistic i know your on a mastoshitter instance with unedited configs so you have to do this but please just have the initial post of the thread be public scope and the rest of the replies/brances of the thread be unlisted therein.
otherwise the peoples federated feeds gets spammed by your single thread.
@tiskaan I can't believe you think sending someone who pestered a stranger about an urban legend a link to a CC licensed article on a website with no advertising that anyone can commercially reproduce for free is "shilling"
@pluralistic i think you should find a instance where the word limit is much bigger so you can avoid those doing this a thread stuff if possible.
a benefit also is you can also be more indepth with what you post lol. well ateast in theory.
Here’s what unlisting doesn’t do: it doesn’t hide the posts you make from the people who follow you. A writer can’t make threads “collapse” for their readers by publishing an initial post and then unlisting the subsequent posts. It would be fantastic if this was the case, but it’s not.
thats how its supposed to be is it not? you just hide posts from people who dont follow you, unless they deliberately explore your profile.
That’s just wrong. What’s more, it’s counterproductive, because hashtags in unlisted posts are also hidden. Remember, by design, Mastodon doesn’t have a search function — instead the way you include a post in the federated discussion of a topic is by opting in with a hashtag.
Unlisting the posts in a thread won’t make your thread less intrusive for your readers — but it will rip the hashtags you include out of the public discourse, even though you’ve followed the Fediverse’s best practice for making them a part of that discourse.
i can see where making your posts hidden here can be problematic in theory but in practice this i feel like its opposite; in my experience the people who typically responds with high quality posts are usually the same group of people youve interacted with.
i mean you can also avoid this problem entirely by using a AP-powered microblogging instance that doesnt have such a miniscule word limit.
On my side i guess what ive couldve done was either muted your thread or actually change my account settings such that it collapsed every posts with a subject warning instead of having the expanded automatically (as youve already added those to all off your posts)
