Carmakers say that the American public can't afford electric SUVs.
But won't sell smaller affordable EVs.

Still .

"Under the revised final regulation expected to be made public as soon as next month, the EPA will slow the pace of its proposed yearly requirements through 2030. The new pace is expected to result in accounting for less than 60% of total vehicles produced by 2030, the sources said."

Automakers feel free to say the quiet part out loud: that they're going to flaunt fuel efficiency rules.
"It's your fault that we have to pay the fines."

That's chutzpah.

"Automakers have also sounded the alarm over the Energy Department's proposal to significantly revise how it calculates the petroleum-equivalent fuel economy rating for EVs, saying it would sharply boost fines for not complying."

US car makers don't want you to buy small affordable EVs (less profit for them).

They don't want a revision of current rules that create a perverse incentive to make inefficient gasoline-powered vehicles.

They don't want curbs on particulate pollution that's bad for your lungs.

They're setting themselves up to be uncompetitive on the global scene.

Next - you heard it from me first - they will beg for subsidies. From taxpayers, that is, you and me. Just wait.

"At $US15,000, ’s new EV is already being touted as a “Corolla killer”, as the world’s second largest EV maker continues to disrupt the global auto market."

https://thedriven.io/2024/02/22/corolla-killer-byd-launches-us15000-ev-in-direct-attack-on-legacy-makers/

It's perhaps less a killer than a successor: The Toyota Corolla (and the Honda Civic) showed up among the lumbering American 1970s road boats the way Indonesian spices finally brought some taste to Dutch food in the 1600s.

Smol Chinese EVs will be disruptive like that.

This repeats what I've been saying, upthread:

"Indeed, most legacy car makers, at least those that are bothering to make EVs at scale at all, are still focused on the top end of the market, selling premium and heavy and high cost EVs, largely to protect their ICE business. In the US, the major car makers are retreating rapidly on their EV plans."

(That would be Detroit legacy. European car makers are making smaller EVs).

Upthread I said US carmakers are setting themselves up for competitive failure. and
"Next - you heard it from me first - they will beg for subsidies. From taxpayers, that is, you and me. Just wait."

And now here is Robinson Meyer saying that same thing:

"About a decade ago, America bailed out the Big Three and swore it wouldn’t do it again. But the federal government is going to have to help the Big Three — and the rest of the U.S. car market — again very soon. "

Affordable EVs are possible (just not in the United States).

"Best known for its low-cost EVs, such as the Dolphin, Atto 3, and sleek Seal sedan, BYD is taking its game up a notch in 2024."

Qin EV - $15,200
Dolphin EV - $13,900
Seagull EV - $9,700

"Although BYD isn’t planning to launch passenger EVs in the US, it is taking market share in key global markets, including Europe, Japan, South America, and Thailand."
