I did something similar when I had a server as well.

Overall Mastodon is a pretty easy setup (especially after a couple of updates), but there are definitely a few "gotchas" along the way.

As a courtesy to small/newer admins, adding "common install issue" error messaging/checks along the way when things go sideways would be a nice future feature.

If you look at this screenshot, you can see how one could skip "Update notes" and go straight to "Update steps"....😬

Definitely skipped something along my way and had to roll back and start over

Smart! I often times run too fast and loose (bad habits die hard) but it's definitely the right and best way to approach things.
