No matter what we do now, human industry and commerce, driven by insatiably greedy capitalists, has thrown Earth's ecosystem so far out of balance that it will take a least a thousand years — if not a million years — for any semblance of what once was to be restored.

But that doesn't mean we should give up! It does not mean we should stop trying to make a better world for our children and our grandchildren. Every tenth of a degree matters and is worth fighting for. Every species we can save from extinction is precious.

Still, it's plain to see, if your eyes are open, that we are well beyond any hope of "getting back to normal."

Researchers at Stanford have shown that the Wilkes Subglacial Basin in East Antarctica, which holds enough ice to raise global sea levels by more than 10 feet, could be closer to runaway melting than anyone realized.
