I decided to revisit some classic sci-fi authors. I read a lot of Asimov and Heinlein ages 12-22 or so. But it’s been over twenty years now.

Instead of finding the best of I picked the old fashioned way, randomly from what was at my local used book store.

I would have grabbed the original Foundation trilogy had they been there, but only Prelude and Second Foundation were on the shelf.

@deinol None of which I own, and possibly none of which I've read. Though I did buy a small pile of similar things a couple of years ago.

@TimWardCam they were both prolific, so once you get off their top ten lists there’s plenty the average reader might have missed. I think Double Star is one of the ones that makes Heinlein lists. I have probably read it, but I don’t know.

@deinol Well, yeah, I don't remember exactly what I did and didn't borrow from the library as a schoolboy in the 1960s.

@TimWardCam for me it was the 80s. 😉

I can still picture the layouts of my middle school and high school libraries though. I spent a lot of time browsing those shelves.

@deinol I have done some excursions back into the stuf I read as a little whelp, but I stopped doing that as it was never as good as I remembered it. Stuff has happened and I see many things in a different light and in some cases just my tastes have changed.
It will be interesting to see what you think.

@GoblinQuester

Fair enough, but I do like revisiting them sometimes so I know whether or not I should still be recommending them to others. I have the feeling my opinions on Asimov will hold up better than my memory of Heinlein.

“Pale blue eyes were set keenly in the brown, lined face which, in turn, stood darkly out against the white surrounding syntho-fur that lined the up-turned collar of his leathtic space jacket.” Asimov — The Martian Way, 1952

Details I wouldn’t have recognized as politically significant when I was young. Reminded me of this Specials song.

“Our ancestors burned the oil of Earth madly and wilfully. They destroyed its coal recklessly. We despise and condemn them for that” —Asimov, The Martian Way, 1952

@deinol there is a quote somewhere from Heinlein in one of his commentaries like: "we will stop wasting oil by burning it, because it is too valuable for fertiliser" (I'm pretty sure it was fertiliser)

@deinol I have the Martian Way downstairs and it’s solid stuff. I remember Norby with fondness from my childhood.

I don’t think I’ve read any of the Heinlein you snagged
