New Zealanders are working to eliminate the intrusive mammals (mostly predators) that endanger endemic animals. Feral cats are now in the target list. Alas, some people demand to protect feral cats instead of the animals (often endangered) that the cat would wipe out.

@rms tracking would seem to indicate that the so-called "domestic" feline has been the major single cause of extinctions during human history. Those statistics do not take into account climate change, but that is now a fast-moving Target.

@rms Yes. More important not to have to keep a cat indoors that to prevent them killing unique species.

Admittedly, I know plenty of people who see the cats' outdoor time as a replacement for a litter box. (Mostly using my garden instead, but that's another rant.) So keeping Moggie indoors would mean an actual input of time, energy, and cleaning. Horrors.
