Got a good photo showing the difference between a callow newly emerged from her pupae and what they look like after their exoskeleton hardens. She is almost light brown— and noticeably confused about what to do. Despite being a “major” she knows very little about being an ant.

Another view of the young ant as she tries to lay low while her sisters rush around her busy and impatient

@futurebird did you see the article I tooted earlier showing the colossal age of African termite hills? Mind blowing

@Beedazzled no I didn’t— that sounds amazing.

@futurebird I love your ant photos and info so much, your posts are a window into a world that is SO GREAT and I'm becoming fascinated with ants now 😃

@futurebird Excellent photos! Do you have a camera set up permanently over the colony or do you use a hand-held camera?

@photovotary I use hand held mostly since keeping the ants well lit enough to photograph all the time would not make them happy.

@futurebird Wow, that's a big difference! And it just shrinks and hardens, does it? No shedding or anything? Amazing.

@mees no shrinking— she will just be big like that— but dark black and less confused.
