Most of us have never committed grand theft auto, so advising TTRPG players to drive their characters like a stolen car is telling them to role play twice, the first time as a car thief.

@smito Nope! I'll probably think of one eventually, but the idea is still pretty fresh in my mind.

I do think it helps to have players assign their characters a personality statement—e.g. "I can't abide authority figures," or "I'm competitive to a fault"—and encourage them to default to those statements whenever they stall making a decision.

Being clear with yourself about a character makes it easier to focus on playing that character.
