I've been having issues with a friend who's consistently gravitating towards those "redpill" influencers who hook people with "look how rich and successful I am" then try to give you life advice. I keep trying to explain to him that they're grifters, but he just pushes back claiming I couldn't possibly know which are vs which ones are actually successful and know what they're talking about.

Personally, I don't even bother trying to separate them into scammers vs actually successful people, because it makes no difference. If someone is showing you their fancy cars and expensive houses as justification for why you should listen to their advice, there's only really two possibilities. Either they're trying to sell you something, or they genuinely haven't moved past the conspicuous consumption phase of personal development. Whichever one it is really doesn't matter, because it both cases their life advice is going to be terrible.
