Home is where the house wren is.

Perched in left-facing profile against the front wall of the nesting box, clinging to the cut circle of the entrance, is a tiny, pretty little songbird with a grey face and a wonderfully speckled and barred brown back and wings, the likewise speckled tail resting pertly down and flat like the tail of a miniature hawk. The little bird, a house wren, is looking up and away towards the shading trees (off camera), eir eye a small, black button and eir gold-brown beak a near match for the warm tones of the nesting box, out of which the sounds of even smaller birds (baby wrens) can be heard buzzing if we listen closely enough. The wren looks like a young parent taking a moment to reflect on the morning's work before ducking back inside the house.

    Fun wren fact from Cornell: "House wrens often add spider egg sacs into the materials they build their nests from," so that, after hatching, the spiderlings can eat all the mites and parasites that accumulate and thus keep the nest tidy for the little wrens.

    Bonus wren with a fat, golden grub.

In the center of the clearing (and the photo) is a warm brown, wooden nesting box, atop which sits a toasted almond of a songbird--a house wren, with a honey-colored breast and a beautiful brown face that matches the sunworn and weathered grey-brown wood of the nesting box roof. The little wren is facing us, but eir small head is turned to our right, showing off the fat, golden grub e holds in eir bill. The sun catches eir bill and the grub, so that both glow with a rich, amber warmth.
