From SCOTUS ruling that it's ok to ignore scientists, to the minimizing of COVID, the growing rejection of vaccines, the increasing restrictions on abortion access, and the lack of sufficient action on climate, the US is really is going all in on science denial. Dark times.

Science is clearly political. The more we ignore this, the more we allow political decisions in which science is suppressed to maximize corporate profits at the sacrifice of people's health and lives. Speak up!

As a kid I doing science, I got taught to use ‘more scientific language’. As an adult I now understand its about conformity to an ideal. Apart from the side effects of making something interesting really boring, it adds a false neutrality that can’t exist.

There is no neutral on a spectrum, only a middle. The difference is subtle but massive. The ‘just the facts’ tone makes a 10% temperature rise sound the same as a 1% temperature rise, as the difference is a literal zero. It really should be reported in science as ‘holy sh!t, all the animals and a lot of people are going to die!’

Science has never been neutral and demanding a neutral tone is another form of ‘shut up’ and conform to the status quo.
