When I was 10, I decided to switch to the Ukrainian language in daily life. This decision was bold for a child in mostly russian-speaking Crimea, but I really enjoyed speaking Ukrainian in school lessons. I thought it was the right decision since we are Ukraine's citizens. Inspired by this decision, I went to the shop near the school after classes and asked for an ice cream in Ukrainian.

@wyndham_l Thank you for sharing your story and memories. It is very important for us to learn about this from you. This is what any western people who say Crimea should stay with russian do not understand - it is not only land. It is never only land. It is the people who live on the land.

I truly hope that one day soon you will be able to return home and speak the language of your choosing, without any fear of negative reactions.
