My manager had a regularly scheduled all hands meeting, which included a lot of people. He ambushed me (in a good way) with a tribute to me. It started out with the intro music to the def sec podcast and a slide with some funny things I instituted/commonly said at work. There was a parade of people saying nice things and then he asked me to say some words. I held it together for about 30 seconds and then, me an oversized, over the hill seasoned vice president of a Fortune 500 company, broke down crying in front of several hundred people.
@jerry On my Boss' 10y anniversary working at DEC, his boss' boss asked me for "dirt" on him for an awards ceremony. I told him things I'd heard about my boss that aren't bad, but would likely illicit a laugh because people will will definitely say "Yeah, that's SO him."
he's so "frugal" to the point trhat he shops at Macy's Boy's Department because the LeCoste Polos are cheaper.
He once showed me a Florsheim Imperial which he proudly said he got on sale. "That's nice. Did you get another to go with it?" was my response.
He balances his household expenses monthly and produces a P & L statement.
He was at one time SHOCKED to have to mow his lawn in December (he moved from the Boston area).
I hope the 10year gift he got was more impressive than the 5year gift I got--a LENOX pen/pencil. Yes, I still have it some 20+ years later.
Hope you get more than a gold watch. Congrads on your next role in life. And thanks for all you do for infosec.
@pkprotoplasm funny story - that made an appearance later. They had a wall of scrolling comments in the background. Someone posted that video. It disrupted the whole meeting 😂
@jerry only now I see you were IBMer. I spent some nice decade and something there (IGA/CIO) until Kyndryl happened. Now I understand your emotions better, the Big Blue was indeed special.
@simonzerafa I am going to get back into podcasting, work on a book, take a ridiculous number of pictures, upgrade the Infosec.* infrastructure, do some renovations in my basement so my youngest son can move down there, help my oldest son fix up his new house, take my wife on a vacation with no work to call me, get back to the gym/lose weight/etc, and sleep. I hope for a lot of sleep.
@jerry@simonzerafa I ended up in my first week with a backlog of decorating and gardening but that was overtaken by preparing security architecture training, signing up to run another degree module and doing final reviews on the book. And I had to play with instructlab - now to add some decent security knowledge…
@jerry That's so wonderful. Makes me wish I hadn't left IBM. I would have loved to work for you. I work for a company where most of the folks would cheer if our CISO left.
@jerry I did 7 years there, and really enjoyed it. I helped IBM learn how to spell security. I helped IBM buy ISS, when we first tried to make the "Security Brand" happen, then later Q1 Labs when we finally got to build the division we wanted.
