Joyce Vance notes that the US public remains bizarrely unaware of the plans for the nation that are right out in the open if Trump is elected — out in the open in Project 2025. She wonders how to make people understand "how urgent that oncoming darkness is."

A reader of her blog, Rhiannon Hutchinson, suggest helping people understand how they'd be impacted personally by this.

"One of her examples: If immigrants were deported—Trump is proposing massive deportations—what would it mean for her grocery bill and access to food."

Vance goes on to explain what happened in Alabama when that state passed its anti-immigrant bill. Immigrant laborers left the state, crops rotted in fields, and food prices shot way up. This reduced the state's GDP dramatically.

Performative cruelty may be immediately satisfying, but it exacts a price.

@wdlindsy It is what happened because of Brexit in the UK. Immigrants were made to feel unwelcome and left in their droves. All the jobs they did such as working in health, the care sector, the building trade, hospitality,, farm labourers and more suddenly had vacancies they couldn't fill. The public suffered. It one of these things proposed by the richest who are the most insulated from the impacts of their actions.

@IndyRichard Yes, you're exactly right. Thank you for noting that. The oddity of these developments — of people deliberately choosing policies that target immigrants — is that people seem unable to understand that in hurting these targeted others, they end up hurting themselves.
