After two weeks of testing:

#openbsd

• Simple, yet many things work.
• Install defaults
• OpenBSD mailing lists

• driver management
• wifi setup
  -/+ manual patching

#freebsd

• Freebsd handbook
• Vast port collection
• Wifi works right after install
• Upgrade / automated patching

• Laptop media keys not working by default
  -/+ Ports building

OpenBSD would be my goto for older machines or server, FreeBSD has enough ports to be usable as daily driver. Looking forward to test it on newer PCs!
