Some less religious people are confused by the enthusiasm Evangelicals have for people well known to be "sinners" in every biblical sense. When you accuse an Evangelical of hypocrisy for praising the faith of a known sinner this only fills them with more glee... (to them) it shows you don't really understand the magnitude that gift from Jesus--

BUT.
But-- it is not that these men are sinners that showboat their faith that upsets me. It is that they are unrepentant sinners.

I'm mentioning "Jesus" explicity since I'm very sick and disgusted with the fig leaf of pretending any of this nonsense is "Judeo-Christian" or even anything other than a particular kind of very American Christian Protestant Evangelicalism.

It's exclusionary and many many many Americans are not invited or included.

@futurebird you mean the fact they are very strict about a few select verses from Leviticus yet hand wave the whole sermon on the mount.

@futurebird So true. There's a lot that non-evangelicals don't know about American protestant Christianity. But instead of providing some kind of education, most media elect to portray them as some kind of pious but misguided souls, instead of the dangerous, authoritarian force that they are.

They also rationalize their idolatry by comparing Trump to Cyrus, the Persian emperor who ultimately repatriated the Jews and helped them rebuild their temple. Though he was pagan (this being a long time before Islam) he achieved God's purpose.

But Cyrus was known in the ancient world for his wisdom and kindness, always concerned with the rights of the minority. Trump's behavior towards today's minorities could not be more opposite.

"Mr. Trump, tell us about a time in your life when you asked Jesus for forgiveness?"

@futurebird I would love to see this get asked at a press conference. Unfortunately it would require that the person asking it have some evangelical literacy, which is lacking in the press corps.

@johnmark @futurebird Back in 2015, a few people did ask Donald Trump about his professing to be a Christian.

His responses included:

"I'm not sure I have ever asked God's forgiveness."

"Why do I have to repent or ask for forgiveness, if I am not making mistakes?"

But, per @futurebird , hypocrisy is not something that concerns Donald Trump or his supporters.
