Alright, someone who's better at gotta explain why one of my accounts can only see a tiny fraction of replies while another can see much more of the conversation on the same post

Is there an issue with the second server?
Is there an issue with my account?

@NaClKnight easy. Mastodon works strictly by follow relationships on an instance level. If nobody on one instance is following the people who posted or made replies to the post then they won't get the same replies as the instance that has more follow relationships.👍

@BeAware @NaClKnight Don't you think this is what may eventually kill Mastodon? On some instances, when I see a coversation on another server, I don't even see replies from some people on third servers.

@vrfist @NaClKnight nah, because you don't need to see every reply to someone else's post, and if you want to, it's a click away...

The important part is that replies to your post come to you, which works fine.🤷‍♂️

@BeAware @vrfist How do you know that I"don't need to see every reply to someone else's post?" What "one click away" you referring to? A second account on a bigger server?

In this case, the view from this account looked like the original poster was overly sensitive or exaggerated the response they got.

One of the posts in their thread mentioned "toxicity in the replies" but all i could see were like 7 replies, all reasonable.

Then i switched over; suddenly there were hundreds of replies.

If i didn't have that account, the OP would have seemed like they were complaining about literally nothing. I wasn't even told there might be posts i wasn't seeing.

that's a bad experience.

@NaClKnight @vrfist the one click is actually 2 clicks. My bad. Click "..." Next to the post and click "Open original page", but yeah, it's not the best. However, as an instance owner, I'm terrified of what would happen if EVERYTHING was pulled into my instance. I wouldn't be able to afford it, unfortunately.

@BeAware @vrfist I hear you.

These problems aren't simply solved and there are always conflicting interests & viewpoints and use cases.

But switching tracks for a sec, where do you see an "open original page?" option? I don't get that when i click the elipses next to a page

My phone client (Megalodon) doesn't offer that option and "open in web browser" (Windows. Edge or Firefox) still opens it from my FGC.Network account so the visibly is the same.

Thank you

@NaClKnight @vrfist that's weird that your app opens it in the browser from your instance, even if it's from another instance😳Moshidon doesn't do it this way, I don't think...

But, I didnt realize you weren't on OG Mastodon, that's my mistake. It's an option there. For you, however, you'd have to click "copy link to post" on the web version and paste the link in the address bar🤷‍♂️a bit more than 1 or 2 clicks unfortunately. But still not super difficult if you know it's there. It is an issue for new users because they don't know it's there.😬

@BeAware So I'm being punished for being on a smaller server. That is helpful. Thank you

@BeAware@social.beaware.live avatar

@NaClKnight yea...a LOT of the things Mastodon does makes it seem like they'd just rather have you on .social which goes against everything Fedi is supposed to be🤦‍♂️

@BeAware Right?

"Your server is too small to participate in the conversations of accounts you follow. Join a bigger server or fuck off" sure is a...

It's a message alright
