Am I the only one skeptical about modern developers focusing so much on making AI look and sound like humans? Is it god’s syndrome “create them to reflect their image” kind of thing? Because what I need from AI as an individual is do the mundane tasks and be recognizable. I don’t need it to be able to impersonate a virtual friend or anything.

@glukozavr I am currently reading a book called Blood in the Machine. It is about the Luddite uprising in early 1800s England.

The Luddites were weavers, knitters, etc who opposed the growing trend of automation. The automation was driving skilled people out of work, consolidating wealth (and power) in the hands of a small tech-elite of factory owners.

The book is about the story of the Luddites, and the comparison with today's similar trends of AI / automation.

Really interesting book.

@picard Yeah… that’s the human problem. The progress brings benefits to humanity in the long run, but bringing ridiculous wealth to chosen rich by taking away from poor majority in the short term. But also this opportunity of ridiculous wealth is often the progress simulation.
Eventuality the problem is global trend of egoism and always choosing personal luxury for common prosperity.
How to solve it nobody knows.

@glukozavr Yes indeed. I wonder if we will ever come up with a proper social solution to this stuff. Because as I'm ereading the book, I am understand what drove those people - the same as what drives many of us to oppose similar trends today. Yet, despite the massive and unhealthy wealth consolidation, it is not difficult to point to so many benefits from the industrial revolution, too. We 'just' need a way to realise similar benefits today, but with equality.

@picard Yeah. And I think it’s about humanity maturity. Democracy should evolve, humanity needs to stop waging wars within the globe. Because with a constant threat from neighboring authoritarian regimes it’s hard to let go the ideas of feudalism. It’s about high level of trust to your peer humans that we are not even close as species.

@glukozavr It is like species maturity. For a time it almost seemed like we had a course which might be a good one. But maybe that was imaginative thinking. For now we have to do the best we can to improve things for everyone.
