5 takeaways from Biden's tariff hikes on Chinese electric vehicles
"Biden wants to cut emissions in a specific way, which is why EVs and other clean industries are getting both giant subsidies and protectionist tariffs. He wants a U.S.-based green energy supply chain — from raw materials all the way to finished products — with American jobs, preferably union jobs, at every step."
"The long-term political viability of the Inflation Reduction Act subsidies underpinning the ongoing US climate tech boom relies on Biden being able to prove that taxpayers aren’t handing a mountain of cash to Chinese manufacturers, and that the subsidies can genuinely spur domestic job creation and investment in strategic industries — even if higher prices for consumer climate tech goods cause a loss of near-term emissions-reduction potential."
Trump will make cars even more expensive: he's calling for a 200% tariff on cars produced in Mexico
"The duties on Mexican autos — coming in addition to Trump’s oft-repeated plans for a 10 percent tariffs on all foreign imports and 60 percent duties on China — would amount to a major escalation of trade conflicts with both Beijing and Mexico City that could upend auto supply chains across the continent. "
As a candidate this year, he has floated tariffs of 60% or higher on all Chinese goods and a 10% across-the-board tariffs on goods from all points of origin."
@CelloMomOnCars Not too long ago, Dem pundits were making fun of Trump's tariffs as anti consumer. More cheap EVs seems like a good thing. The key here is the politics but it doesn't seem to matter what Biden does as for some insane reason he trails in the polls anyway.
He's doing a. lot of the things voters like, e.g. going all out for renewable energy, insisting on union jobs, etc. Doesn't get enough coverage in the media, so it's DIY climate action communication now.
If you can convince ONE friend to go vote, you will have made a difference. And that friend will listen to you much more carefully than they will pay attention to the media anyway, because they trust you.
