why on and in general posts are more often boosted than liked (or favorited)?

If you boost something then people (like your follower) see the boosted post. If you like a post only the poster sees it. Ok, we here with other software then Mastodon can also look who has boosted or liked something and we can also use custom reactions, which is more then the star (this features maybe come when Meta buys Mastodon ;-) ). Same as quotes.

But booth, boosts and likes bring another problem. If you boost something, does it mean you agree, is it your opinion or you just want to let people know about it (thats why quotes exists). Same with a like, does it mean, ok I noticed it, yes I agree ... or just think someone shares a bad happening or experience. Does a like then mean, that you find it good ... for that are custom reactions made where you can use emojis to express your feelings or opinions. But sadly, the lead developer of Mastodon denies to implement this things.

@me_the_fl00f @nekoow_ @bpavuk

The emoji reactions are cool but isn't "likes" only being federated by the origin server, an ActivityPub thing?🤔

Also, Meta isn't going to implement emoji reactions, because if they were, I would have thought they'd do it on threads🤷‍♂️ they've already implemented some of Misskeys ways of doing things like Quote Posts, so they had an opportunity already.

If I like this post, you see, that I liked it and all others who see this post see it also but only you get notified about it. Federation itself means more, that comments are shared across instances. But often when you jump in a conversation not all of them are federated because not all people follow each others and here comes the point where not all comments are federated and you have to view that on the original instance. Same as if I would only anser you and untag the others.

About the Meta thing, there was some days ago an article about how to make money in the future social web ... it is more likely they will use a modified version of the AP protocol to ask for money for lets call it premium features.

@me_the_fl00f @nekoow_ @bpavuk actually, folks on the instances BESIDES yours and mine don't see the like....

🤷‍♂️likes don't federate between instances that aren't the origin and the instance that does the "like". I've been knowing this for awhile but I thought you were saying it was specifically mastodon. However, that is how it works, whether it's just mastodon or not was what I was questioning.

Edit: for example, you can see proof of this here on this view of the post from mastodon.social. no like 🤷‍♂️

https://mastodon.social/@BeAware@social.beaware.live/112431455584045497

With Meta. I was under the impression that they would just build their own premium paid features and that wouldn't federate because it's not built into native AP and if they built a "modified AP" it wouldn't be worth it because literally nobody else would use it, I wouldn't think. Maybe that's just me though.

me_the_fl00f ,

@BeAware @nekoow_ @bpavuk Yes, could be, that it worked or works now like this. But as Mastodon implements so many things different, people stop to care what they do or show. I had 2 or 3 times for short a Mastodon account but it had to less functions compared to Pleroma or Misskey or their forks.

We will se what Meta will do.

@bpavuk because likes only federate between the instance that the favorite comes from and the instance where the post originates. Boosts federate everywhere and give the post more reach. In general your "likes" aren't public unless someone goes to the OG instance of every single post you "like".🤷‍♂️

@BeAware so many nuances 😵‍💫
but this place is still far better for me than Twitter, unless it comes to Mortal Kombat content

BeAware ,
@BeAware@social.beaware.live avatar

@bpavuk yea. There's LOTS of little nuances to get used to here. But the niche topics like that will slowly get better over time with the integration of BlueSky and Threads, hopefully.

bpavuk OP ,
@bpavuk@mastodon.social avatar

@BeAware Threads.net at least does something to get integrated, I can already read posts from many interesting people from Threads. I am not sure if Bluesky will ever catch up, it still does not have video posting ability, and is very hard to bridge to (I read both protocols' specifications and know what I am talking about)

@bpavuk but...you know it's already happening right...?🤨

bpavuk OP ,
@bpavuk@mastodon.social avatar

@BeAware I know about Bridgy but a first-party solution feels better anyway 🤷
but that's not surprising, cuz Bridgy Bsky <-> Fedi is still in early Beta. time will show 👀

BeAware ,
@BeAware@social.beaware.live avatar

@bpavuk there won't ever be a first party integration unfortunately. If they wanted to do that, I don't think ATproto would exist. However, it does and now they "federate" with.....themselves. Sooo....🤷‍♂️bridgy fed will have to do. It is early and has bugs and sometimes stops working, but Ryan is moving quick and already has been working tirelessly to fix these issues: https://github.com/snarfed/bridgy-fed/issues
