Mycology

vinter , in Not quite a fungus but a result of one

Nice to see the real thing! Lots of people recently down south here in the states posting Verbesina and similar "frost flowers" producing plants during the freeze

Oh nice! They look funky too!

WelcomeBear , (edited ) in Some stunning orange jello!

Witches’ Butter! (maybe)
I’ve never been brave enough to eat it, looks kinda… not good.
Edit : here’s a better article

jdf038 , in Anyone know what these are? Found in NW Florida, December

The one on the right looks like a Roman dodecahedron

It looks like something in the family phallaceae to me! I know them as stink horn mushrooms. They get into some pretty wild shapes and they smell dreadful

Here's a picture of one!

Here's another

And here's one to really show you the nasty brown slime

GregoryTheGreat , in Anyone know what these are? Found in NW Florida, December

What do they taste like?

shalafi OP ,

Oh god. The brown stuff on the orange one smells exactly like it looks.

Fiivemacs , in Anyone know what these are? Found in NW Florida, December

Looks like mushrooms

Well, I've never saw a mushroom looking like the right one.

...Sorry I can't help you OP, I only know how to like mushroom picture.

vinter , in Some stunning orange jello!

Nice! They're fun to toss in soups or make gummies

akwd169 , in I just found this community, and I like it!

Wow nice pic :) where did you take this?

@cosmicrookie@lemmy.world avatar

Thanks! This is in Northern Denmark earlier this year

gibmiser , in I still think about this giant puffball my boyfriend found 5 years ago

Now open it and breathe deeply. Welcome it into you. Become one with it.

ivanafterall ,

Isn't this step 1 for identifying any unknown mushroom? Or is it step 2 after "have a bite?"

remotelove ,

If step 1 is have a bite and step 2 is to have open communication with an entity from another universe, then we can ignore any previous instruction. I think. I am confused now, anyways.

WalrusByte ,
@WalrusByte@lemmy.world avatar

Step 3: ???
Step 4: Profit

chellomere ,
gibmiser ,

Well that looks fun, you get to be a mommy

noUsernamesLef7 ,

Oh thanks, saved. Will break this image out next time it happens, though I usually end up dying from getting into desperate situations looking for antifungals before it gets to this point.

Does it feel fluffy? It looks so pillowy.

PhatInferno OP ,
@PhatInferno@midwest.social avatar

Kinda? Reminds me of like a wet moss feeling?

blackluster117 ,
@blackluster117@possumpat.io avatar

That's pretty soft. Moss rocks.

Freaking sweet find.

If only you know where it came from you can get another one next year because they come back.

Hint hint: don't tell anyone where you found it.

PhatInferno OP ,
@PhatInferno@midwest.social avatar

With how big the log was I'm expecting to get quite a bit next year!

voight , in First post, first fungal find of the year

They did surgery on a grape

vinter , in A little slice of Peziza

Pezizales, at least haha
Ascomycetes, especially cups, terrify me. There are so many that look macroscopically identical
