Houseplants

YeetPics , in Daily briefing: Want a glowing houseplant? Now you can buy one
@YeetPics@mander.xyz avatar

I love plants, but I also love zombie movies.

I'll buy V2 when they make a glowing pothos and I'm relatively certain this won't mutate me in any way.

morgunkorn , in Rescued a plant, maybe Hibiscus?
@morgunkorn@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

I agree, the leaf shape looks like a Althaea officinalis, also known as Marsh Mallow, of the same family as the Hibiscus

Luccajan , in "A pumpkin is not a house plant" they told me...

I might resort to growing my peppers and tomatoes inside this year. The slugs are everywhere end keep eating my plants, they've destroyed my aubergine and paprika plants.

Sal OP ,

I have been very succesful with indoor peppers. With tomatoes I had too much plant and a few cherry tomatoes (from a supermarket cherry tomato's seed)

JadenSmith , in "A pumpkin is not a house plant" they told me...

Is that a hygrometer on the right??

Sal OP ,

Yeah, I have three moisture-in-soil sensors inserted around the plant. The idea was to use to them to control the irrigation, but they did not work out.

JadenSmith ,

It looks rather snazzy! What's the brand?

Sal OP ,

The sensors are from AZDelivery, these ones. They are connected to an arduino nano which reads the capacitance values and sends them over to a raspberry pi 5. The raspberry pi 5 is connected to a few other sensors (CO2, particle counter, air humidity and temperature all from Sensirion), and there is a 7-inch raspberry pi display that the pi writes images to. I was making a home air quality station but I decided to place everything around the pumpkin instead for now, to see if I could get something interesting out of that. But, so far most of them have not been practically useful.

Asclepiaz , in My Hoya Kalimantan cutting is starting to bloom!

I love hoya blooms! So pretty take another at full bloom 😍

Polkira OP ,

I will!

shalafi , in Damn, Scylla is really happy

Buried an 80G trash can in the yard, made a water garden. Took a slightly smaller plastic window box, drilled holes in the sides and bottom, screwed it to the side.

Transplanted Sarracenia and sundews are going nicely crazy. (I know, not legal to grab them out the wild, but I'm working on growing more and have reintroduced them to my swamp in the boonies.)

BONUS: We got dragonflies hovering around! And the trees frogs are back! Love me some insectivores, plant or animal.

nakedunclothedhuman , in Pineapple flower update! She has some blooms to show off to y'all now!

This is so cute and I, for one, welcome any pics and a time lapse gif sounds awesome!

Redfox8 , in Why is my Alocasia Polly ‘special’?

Had a quick search: "Grow Alocasia 'Polly' in bright light out of direct sunlight, in free draining peat-free compost. A minimum temperature of 16ºC is perfect, ideally in a humid location, such as a bathroom. If the room isn't humid enough, you can increase humidity levels by standing the pot on a tray filled with pebbles and then add water until it rises to just below the bottom of the pot."

If relevant, try addressing humidity and ensure it stays out of direct sunlight. It could be waiting until conditions are favourable.

RadicalCandour OP ,

Thank you for this info!
I feel like this applies to just general care though. I’m looking to learn specifically what happens when I have a healthy stump, how to stimulate stem/leaf growth.

It’s very happy, I’ve harvested a lot of seedlings that are growing beautifully and I think mama are growing more in the roots. I’m just confused why she be like she be 😅

Replying bc I like the ß.

Succeß.

Karyoplasma ,

You know, I've always wondered why people substitute ß with ss if it's not available in the typeset. The name of ß is literally "Eszett", so it should be substituted with sz.

Joining8523 ,

The german prononciation of the letter ß is eszett but the word weiß is pronounced Weiss. Even in German you will never see weiß written in weisz. Weiss is not technically accurate either but is shown that way from time to time

zout ,

In the past sz was also used, but it's not allowed in modern spelling. The ß was (is?) used for both ss and sz, to the point where nobody knew anymore which it was originally.

radix , in My friend complimented how well I'm taking care of my plants and I feel compelled to confess my methods
@radix@lemm.ee avatar

Congrats! I wonder if petting the leaves demonstrates some love that makes them thrive more. Legends say talking nicely to them makes them grow better (read that somewhere in a Madeline L'Engle novel, I think).

spinne ,
@spinne@sh.itjust.works avatar

There's at least some truth to it: a little disturbance (like wind or someone talking to them and riffling the leaves) helps plants grow stronger stems. I don't know if there's any data that differentiates between the effects of a fan or someone telling their plant that they're loved and appreciated, but who cares? Your plants do better when you talk to them instead of leaving them standing still. 👍🏼

Annoyed_Crabby , in After 5 long years my pineapple plant is finally starting to flower!

Nice! I planted 4 pineapple in my garden and i heard from farmer it'll be a looong wait before it start to flower, since i plant it using the head of the pineapple. It's gonna be some time i get to eat the fruit 😅

MegadethRulz OP ,

From what I’ve read, it’s like 2 years to grow and then it’s another 6 or more months to actually grow a full fruit. Thing is, it’ll lay dormant when it gets cooler conditions and takes a while of proper warm conditions to finally flower. Or something along those lines.

Annoyed_Crabby ,

Ya that's what i've heard too, but 2 years is the minimum according to the farmer, and we lived in tropical country. Sometime natural phenomenon like el nino or la nina can knock the grow time off. Idk i'll just plant it and forget

MegadethRulz OP ,

You can try to force it to flower with an apple too. The apple releases some compound when it decays that stimulates flowering apparently. Sorry I’m too lazy to look up the specifics.

Annoyed_Crabby ,

Naw it's okay, i just plant it last month so it would be at least 2 years before it's necessary

HeartyBeast ,

Probably ethene

MegadethRulz OP ,

Relevant article about pineapple growing.

The paragraph about flowering indeed mentions the ethylene gas.

tehfishman , in My bioluminescent petunia

Mine arrived all mangled, with most of the roots ripped off during shipping. It's recovering now, looking forward to hopefully getting to see the bioluminescence in a few weeks

Zetta OP ,

Treat it well and the new growth will be bright!

KillerTofu , in My bioluminescent petunia

Heck yeah! I’m excited for mine to arrive!!
