It really is, teachers are truly undervalued/underpaid and parents these days trust their kids are telling the truth. If a kids mouth is moving, they are almost certainly lying lol.

blindsight ,

It's not like that where I'm teaching, in Canada, but I understand it's similar in large swaths of the US, particularly in "red states".

Of course things have gotten worse since COVID, and screen addiction is a problem (I say when I'm on my phone instead of sleeping), but it's not hard to control a class as an experienced sub, from what I've encountered across two provinces and over a dozen schools. I think that's a reasonable benchmark, too, since students are usually on their worst behaviour with subs.

Hyperreality , (edited )

Not the US, but I hear similar stories from Belgium, the Netherlands and France. Covid did a lot of damage, but it's not just that. It's not just phones either.

It's that teachers no longer enjoy the authority they once had(not just a teacher thing, people will happily argue with their doctor based off a 5 second google), and the relationship with parents is often poor or even combative so they don't work with the teacher. We're talking parents beating up teachers or thinking they know better than the professionals. Parents are also often and increasingly overstretched. I had kids whose parents I'd never see. Education is also often underfunded and underpaid, certainly if you factor in the hours you need to put in, especially as kids are more easily bored and you can't just hold a lecture.

There are staff shortages everywhere, but because there are staff shortages, new recruits often don't get enough support, which means they leave within the first few years, which means existing overstretched staff don't see the point in supporting new staff, which means new staff are even less supported, etc. etc.

I do appreciate how they're just openly playing their hand now. Makes the battle against fascism very clear cut and plain to see. They're relying on the news-bubbling and conspiratorial leanings of their base to carry them through, but they don't have the numbers.

We do. Just have to get them to the polls.

At this point I feel as if it had lost any meaning even when all parties of a conversation are Jewish.

I can't describe how disgusted I am by Israel throwing so much dirt on Jewish identity that had a noble flavor to it at some point.

It was never about productivity or making more money (they'd save more if they didn't blow shitloads of corporate real estate), it's about control (oh, and the shitload of corporate real estate they spent shitload of money on)

TigrisMorte ,

Oh, it is about making money. Just not making the company money. Check who leases the building to the company. You'll often find a shell corp which is owned not by the company but by folks at the top who are funneling that cash into their own pockets. Then add in the "exclusive" deals the owner shell company makes with service companies and you'll often find a bit of cash headed to the shell corp as well

The really sneaky and shitty part of this bill is enabling private citizens to sue - the Supreme Court decided that this is a valid run around first amendment rights in Texas SB 8. Now Republicans are using this citizen enforcement in all sorts of stupid areas that otherwise would be subject to federal injunctions or review for first amendment violations.

Mycatiskai , in ‘Gaslit by doctors’: UK women with endometriosis told it is ‘all in their head’

My sister lived in London and had really bad headaches, went to the doctors repeatedly and was given pain killers but no scans or tests. This repeats over the course of a year until her behavior is changing. She isn't answering messages, she left her phone at work which she almost never lets out of her hand, much less her sight.
My mom called my sisters friend to go to her and see if she is alright. She was wandering the street towards the supermarket to call an ambulance, got to the hospital and they released her with stronger painkiller and no blood tests or scans. Three days later upon insistence from her social worker (she fostered teens so has a social worker) they finally did a blood test, then a scan and found a giant tumor in her brain. She was dead a few weeks later.

If they hadn't just brushed off her increasing pain levels for a whole year of doctors appointments maybe they could have given her a few months to live and people could have said goodbye.

Chup , in Germany's Olaf Scholz has become a major problem for Ukraine

It's odd to see such an article on Euronews, who are usually very reliable on their reporting. Here we have a mix of different things, mainly existing in the media sphere but less in reality.

  1. Leaked recordings – That's the resort of Mr. Pistorius, the Minister of Defence. But even blaming Mr. Pistorius is a bit far fetched, as it was one officer on a trip in Asia not following any safety code by joining a secret online meeting via public wifi and his private phone. Mr. Pistorius already explained the case in the last days. So the blame should go to that person ignoring the safety protocol or their IT service company for failing to instruct properly. Nothing to do with Scholz at all, but some tabloids of course print those baseless calls from opposition politicians. I just don't get why Euronews would publish that.

  2. loose-lipped press conferences – Completely made up 'scandal' about Scholz indicating why Taurus cruise missiles cannot be delivered to Ukraine. He didn't even directly say it, but it was a media interpretation, that France and the UK provide geodata for their missiles and the UK has personnel in Ukraine. And on top, that information was already in the news in October 2023. Everyone knows it, it's public for half a year. I feel like waking up in a parallel universe, where made up stories and the norm. It was publicly known and he didn't even say it, yet he gets blamed for leaking secrets.

  3. confused policy – Since the beginning, Scholz was against sending Taurus, like very other country asked about 500km missiles as well. He never changed his stance. The article also doesn't go into detail what would be confused about his policy.

Yet, it's getting mentioned what threats Russia is throwing against Germany by supporting Ukraine further. I looked up the writer and it's a British journalist at BBC radio. This article sounds more like a rant on Sun on Dailymail and is not up to the standard that I know from Euronews.

This whole topic about the Taurus cruise missiles feels like a bad act anyway, as no country provided 500 km missiles. Every country said no. And no means no. Unless it's Germany, then the questions comes again and again and again and fingers pointing at Scholz for standing with the same policy as always and as every other country in the world: no 500km missiles.
