Excellent fried right now.

NABDad ,

Yeah, I was gonna say, they wouldn't make it to BLTs with me.

Although, when I'm frying them I like to let them just barely start to turn red.

SzethFriendOfNimi ,

Fried green tomatoes

Sliced thin. But only thin enough that the tomato doesn’t bend when held by the edge.

Bartered with cornmeal and fried and you’re in heaven.

Just be sure to eat them hot since they don’t travel well.

Just hear me out on this one. BLFGTs. Bacon, Lettuce, Fried Green Tomatoes.

AlecSadler ,

A bar near me serves BLFGT sliders and they are superb.

Man, maybe it's just my mood today, but that read kinda...dark. 🤣

SchmidtGenetics OP , in [WIPW] What's your Work In Progress project that you can share on this wistful Wednesday

Me, I am working on a dog run for a new dog. Requires a lot of “before we close it off” projects though.

https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/2685617c-5c32-4324-9d45-db23ebae05fa.jpeg

Shed for storage, pea gravel for “doggie litter”, it will be latticed at the edges, put some pvc panels on the ceiling to protect it from the rain/snow (and collect it!).

I think that about covers the extent of THIS project, puppy tax to follow.

NataliePortland ,
@NataliePortland@lemmy.ca avatar

Damn that’s a lot of work you have on your hands! Great work bro

SchmidtGenetics OP ,

Thanks growmie!

Yeah all of this was completely unexpected additional stuff after the dog passed away, so I still have all my
Other projects at like 50% and 80% done, but you know life. And since a plan is just a list of stuff to go wrong….

Apparantly they just let you walk out with puppies now…. So there’s a bit of a hurry on this before my yards destroyed…

Nouveau_Burnswick ,

If you we're my neighbour, I would stand around and watch you work while I drink beer offering irreverent suggestions a lot.

We gonna have an issue, but if you’re bringing a cold one and I’m able to wisecrack back, the camaraderie is always appreciated.

Because lord knows the wife and I would be wondering the hell you doing in your yard while I have a bowl….

Did you know that poppies are the perfect offering plant for aphids? Found that out when my poppies all went black with aphids, but they did not touch my weed and all my other plants. I think they like the juice...

Just look at that...(with a little helper munching on them)

@qwertilliopasd@lemmy.world avatar

Looking good! What is that siding on it? Almost looks like sideways channel lap.

SchmidtGenetics OP ,

Spent a lot of time shopping around for a shed kit that was just right and wouldn’t cost more than some wood and paint. Only thing I had to do was omit the slope kit and redrill some screws. Everything was pre punched, so didn’t need to worry about square and true so much while building it.

I couldn’t name the profile, but they’re about 16” wide extruded aluminum panels. Still have the doors to put together.

Ah they look good. Now you gotta resist the urge to double the price with shelves and hooks.

SchmidtGenetics OP ,

Just a couple, the rakes/shovels will go on the fence, this is for like the mower and other stuff. Will wire it up for some battery chargers and some light though!

Nouveau_Burnswick ,

Not a Canadian Tire link. :(

SchmidtGenetics OP ,

Honestly, not one of my favorite places to go.

I ordered it off of Amazon, but it’s available in a bunch of places. I find you can avoid the cheaper knockoff stuff if you find stuff that’s available in brick and mortar stores. And get it from Amazon if it’s cheaper, try to support local when it’s not an arm and a leg…

I_Fart_Glitter , in How to germinate and grow opium poppies

My problem is the deer adore them, even when soaked in hot pepper wax and repels-all (rotten egg and garlic juice).

These pics are from the ones growing in the back garden of the plant nursery near me, shockingly beautiful flowers:

Nice, thanks. I've been wanting to add poppies to my garden for years but gave up/became frustrated after a couple failures. I was probably being too nice to them. I'll give it another shot.

Churbleyimyam , in Question About Bamboo

I don't have any experience with bamboo but I'd imagine you wouldn't get the bushy foliage low down that you're looking for. How about perennial herbs, like thyme, sage, lavender, rosemary etc? As well as plugging the gap at the bottom of your fence, you would get amazing aromas in your garden and the flowers on them can be beautiful and beneficial to insects. In my experience perennial herbs are resilient and low maintenance too.

SteefLem , in My first raised garden bed
@SteefLem@lemmy.world avatar

Heeey i have those lights. Solar right? Mine gave after 6 months. Which for those lights is quite good, others lasted few weeks.

Ps. Dont use lights when dark in vegetable beds they need dark.

transientpunk OP ,
@transientpunk@sh.itjust.works avatar

It is extremely dark, and the lights imitate fire, so they provide ambiance, not lighting. (They look bright because of the long exposure) The garden definitely gets more lighting from the street lights than it does from the tiki lights

SteefLem ,
@SteefLem@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah forgot they have that fake flame thing, you’re right. :)

snausagesinablanket ,
@snausagesinablanket@lemmy.world avatar
SteefLem ,
@SteefLem@lemmy.world avatar

Ha :)

SchmidtGenetics ,

For what it’s worth, very few vegetables need dark and some actually thrive under 24/7 lighting (provided you don’t exceed the plants specific DLI), but yes some are photoperiods and can be affected by the lack of a dark period.

Now to get nerdy, the plants need X amount of a certain wavelength to activate the hormone anyways, this way the moon, lightning and street lighting doesn’t affect it. Evolution and natural selection and all that. So bottom line, if you can’t read by light (full moon can provide enough to read barely sometimes) it’s probably fine

Aux , in Question about hybrid vegetables

Now that your question was answered in great detail, you should read or watch something about apple genetics. These trees have a genetic mechanism which ensures that their offspring will never be the same as parents. And thus all commercially grown apple trees across the world are clones. And always were.

Krauerking , in Going to be rewarded with blooms anytime now growmies!

Nice! My zinnias are all starting up too as well as my super slow growing Dahlias.
Really getting towards full flower season.

Cordyceps , in Going to be rewarded with blooms anytime now growmies!

This is so cool! Im thinking on making a large lifted bed of lilies myself. Was thinking on tree lilies (the very tall ones). I still need to do something about the wind on our front lawn, so fencing would come first.

7EP6vuI , in Bamboo plant growing too tall?

It probably will grow roots if you cut it. See here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dracaena_sanderiana#Cultivation

You could also plant it into a real pot.

Do you fertilize the water somehow?

Thanks for your relpy and link. I just use normal tap water, but make sure to change it every now and then :)
