insomniac_lemon , in TTS voices on Linux for Firefox are shit - video with examples
@insomniac_lemon@kbin.social avatar

Yeah, in my opinion this sounds worse than DECtalk from all the way back in 1983 (for instance, Perfect Paul). Or MacinTalk (see its usage in Whatever Happened to Robot Jones, particularly the original version).

The newer stuff often tries to sound less robotic but then if it doesn't have the complexity to sound realistic it just sounds worse, harder to understand and yet also sounding uglier... warbly.

Poutinetown ,

Depends what you mean by newer stuff. OpenAI is pretty good in terms of tts

insomniac_lemon ,
@insomniac_lemon@kbin.social avatar

I meant newer than the context I stated (1983). And also ground floor stuff that doesn't need internet (after install) and doesn't need a purchase/sign-up. Available by default or not too obscure to get decent voices.

There might be some half-decent voices somewhere, but it really just doesn't seem like it's night-and-day for the ground floor stuff from what I've seen. Maybe some vocaloid stuff but even that seems like a chore to do the phonemes manually to get expected pronunciation.

about:blank with a dark theme is the only new tab experience I will ever use.

julianh , in Firefox saw an increase in users (~50% in Germany and ~30% in France) following Apple’s default browser changes in the EU.

You're telling me that anticompetitive practices stifle competition?

For real though, this is great news. Glad the EU finally got apple to open things up a bit, even if it's only in the EU.

loki , in Q: What is the easiest way to stop firefox/tb/moz upates in Linux forever?
  • Fork it, Learn to build it, Forget it.

  • P̶r̶o̶f̶i̶t̶

  • Blame Firefox when a security exploit passes through

sramder , in Q: What is the easiest way to stop firefox/tb/moz upates in Linux forever?
@sramder@lemmy.world avatar

A: Find the back of your computer. Locate and remove the ethernet cable.

This solution is hardware based (so nothing Mozella does to try and pay its staff will have any effect). Completely open source, so you and others can easily observe how it functions and potentially implement improvements. 100% effective at achieving your stated goal (provided you don’t have WiFi). And lastly: Has the added benefit of protecting you from any security risks introduced by running a 5 year old web browser.

Max_P , in The ability to re-bind any keyboard or mouse shortcuts is major accessibility issue that I think needs more attention
@Max_P@lemmy.max-p.me avatar

I'd go a step further and say that applications shouldn't implement keyboard shortcuts at all. Ideally there'd be an integration with the OS where the application exposes the available commands and the default key binding.

That way the OS can provide consistent key bindings across all applications, so if you switch Ctrl+C to Meta+C, it just works, and opens up a lot of possibilities for weird accessibility setups, and also opens up room for changes to the keyboards.

It's weird enough as it is if you use dvorak or more regional ones like bépo, and it's not even a different physical keyboard it's just a key layout. We have touchscreens and virtual keyboards, adding a Ctrl and Alt key to a virtual keyboard takes space and it's kinda ridiculous when we could have a nice customization shortcuts ribbon so you have copy/paste and stuff handy. There's also voice inputs.

Input needs to be decoupled from the concept of a keyboard. Steam Input is a good step towards that for games specifically, but it would be amazing as a general system so you can comfortably use Firefox from a game controller and whatnot.

LiveLM ,

MacOS does this. Basically any action present on an app's global menu can have a key bound to it in system settings.
Not every app exposes its menu to the system however.

lettruthout , in Finally back down to 14 tabs, still too embarrassed to show anyone

'Don't know about tabs alone but I regularly have 20-30 windows open. Many of those have more than 3 tabs. Firefox starts to get a little slow beyond that count on my machine.

original_reader , in Finally back down to 14 tabs, still too embarrassed to show anyone

Many tabs would be less of a problem in Firefox if the tab handling was better.

I use Firefox on principle, but tbh, Chrome's and esp. Vivaldi's tab handling are miles ahead.

Artopal ,

TabStash is the name of the extension that solved my tabs problems. Now I have hundreds of tabs "open", but they are neatly organized (stashed).

I usually finish before I get to the end of the tabs, then I get sad because I probably won’t ever revisit those tabs. Maybe they would have been “the one?” Forever lost.

user224 , in Finally back down to 14 tabs, still too embarrassed to show anyone
@user224@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

That's not too many.

Before it broke, I had 58 tabs open on my phone, currently I have only 19. Although on desktop I generally don't cross 10.
But my aunt surpassed everything.
Her Chrome (Android) doesn't even show a number anymore. It's just ":D" - https://i.imgur.com/R2QfIFQ.jpeg

Chewy7324 ,

On Firefox Android after ~100 tabs the amount is replaced with ∞.

burrito ,

On mine it is permanently ∞.

I'm aware there are some more private options, but I feel like ff is enough and is important to keep user numbers up, because once Firefox goes the forks go too.

N0x0n , in Why I use Firefox

What's great about native firefox is that you STILL can tinker arround to improve privacy/security and shape it how you want.

Don't know how long it will last though ^^" One day I'm certain I will have to switch and I will really miss my little buddy :(.

Swarfega , in Why does not firefox care more about the android version?

I actually prefer Chrome over Firefox. But fuck Google and fuck Chrome.

I'm happier since leaving Chrome and Google for Firefox and DuckDuckGo. I no longer have to use Incognito to do regular searches to prevent seeing that search as a recommendation in feeds and videos.

frankpsy , in Why does not firefox care more about the android version?

I'm just glad that it exists at all. Google has Chrome tied down on Android because they feel they can.

Isn't a low minimum API level a good thing? Doesn't that mean more people can use the app?
