@Tim_Eagon@emarktaylor@cfb very likely just a temporary conglomerate. The viability of any of the conferences other than SEC and Big 10 is somewhat questionable.
A basketball coach buyout of $15.5 million for Ohio State, which is about the amount that the school's football coach, Ryan Day, publicly said last year it needed in "NIL" to fund a team.
@emarktaylor@cfb@slmandel This is stupid; we all know that boosters and NIL go hand in hand. It sounds more like the NCAA is trying to preserve what shreds of authority they still have by any means.
When folks argue that players are in College for their degrees, and a scholarship is enough, I think of the Basketball players and that argument just doesn't make any sense.
All the decent Football players enter the draft at the earliest possible opportunity - and will change schools at the drop of a hat if offered a better 'deal'.
Most of the starters are not there for the classes.
@philip_cardella@emarktaylor@cfb The funny thing is that what's going to end the repeat transfers are NFL scouts saying that doing so shows a lack of commitment.
Also from Ryan - but I think CFB is age-restricted Pro Football with teams coincidentally happening to play at universities already ...
"And, as the TV hooks get deeper and deeper, you get the Playoff, and the expanded Playoff, and conference realignment, and maybe one day the complete bifurcation of the sport into one semi-pro league and amateur football for everyone else."
@Alphastream I think the whole thing is ridiculous. So we have to pretend players aren't making decisions about where to play based on NIL money or that NIL deals aren't a recruiting tool? It won't be long before schools, probably in the Big 10 or SEC, start telling the NCAA to pound sand. I can't wait.
