Some one asked in DM how to identify ants. So here is my method:

The best resource online is

https://www.inaturalist.org/

This is an effectively peer-reviewed database of correctly identified photos of insects.

To identify an ant search for "ants" then set your region to the location where you saw the ant. Look through the photos until you see a match.

@futurebird
Speaking of rare, not a mite or ant, but I was excited to discover these wee (2-3 mm) folk in my garden over the past week.

  • 1st iNat observation of this species in NY State.
  • 2nd on BugGuide. The other was a decade ago in Cortland County (Ithaca).
  • I think GBIF has just the one from Ithaca. No museum records in GBIF!?

Exciting ant queen collecting trip in AZ. Why does it feel like all the coolest ants are in the South and South West. It's not fair.

    While doing some macro photography on my front steps, I fell fully backward off them, taking out two potted plants which slowed and tempered my fall.

    I don't think anyone saw it, so I'm sharing with you all.

    Much the same. Feel like I'm still waking up, but gotta do more garden recovery. It's getting away from me!

    One of our many sweat bees on a tiny flower (5mm or so) with a name I always forget; it's a native plant with red leaves and the extra-small pollinators love it.

    Maybe Heuchera?
    I get lots of little bees - and sometimes bumble bees! - dangling from their flowers like that.

    We have about a dozen species that can be ID'd from photographs. Most only get to Subgenus Dialictus.

    FYI — I’m going to be traveling over the next couple of weeks, leaving early Tuesday morning (April 2) and not returning home until around April 17 or 18. Along the way I’m likely to be offline most days, with little to no Internet access, so I’m not planning to post regularly to my B&C account during that time, if at all.

    Keep up the good fight while I’m gone!

    The cab ride with ants went OK we made it to school in one piece- the girls found the bumpy ride scary and hid in their sugar freight car.

    I had to leave half the colony at home. This colony is massive. If I inspire some kid to want ants their parents will hate me OMG

    Thanks for the Dem ad, Nik!

    Via Aaron Rupar:

    #NikkiHaley on Newsmax: "Let's speak some hard truths. If Donald #Trump becomes the Republican nominee, we will get a President Kamala Harris. You mark my words. He cannot win a general election ... he can't get independents. He can't get suburban women."

    I have complex, deeply mixed and confused feelings about jargon. Part of me loves jargon. I love precise terminology, little used words, and they can be so useful. At the same time, I'm not a fan of that feeling that you would be able to understand something ... but someone piled up jargon in the way just to keep you out.

    Is there a way to thread the needle? To indulge in obscure vocabularies but avoid gatekeeping?

    xris ,
    @xris@ecoevo.social avatar

    @futurebird
    In writing? Or speaking?

    In workshops and nature walks, I use a lot of entomological terms, for precision. For example: gyne, not queen. I'll also define the terms, and that becomes part of the education, e.g.: bumble bee lifecycle.

    We're restoring the exterior of my home, so I'm reading a lot of architecture books. LOTS of jargon there! But it's also precise, so I keep a dictionary of architectural terms handy to look things up. It also helps me talk to contractors!
