Office Hours: Why is the world drifting toward authoritarianism and neofascism? https://robertreich.substack.com/p/office-hours-why-is-the-world-drifting?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=mastodon

@steviesyerda @rbreich I think you have the cause and effect backwards. The 1% have been afraid of effective, popular democracy since 1968 when it became obvious that people were waking up and getting organized as never before. Almost everything that's happened politically and economically since then can be explained as they chose to kill or jail as many of us as they could to take back control before they lost it for good. They knew they were causing climate change. Fascism is their end game.

@rbreich It's not drifting. It's being driven there. That's been the end game of corporate capitalism since at least the 1960s. The lords of capital either had to give up control or kill or jail so many of us that they could stop the global changes seen in the 60s. They've been pushing us in this direction for decades.

In early June last year, my beloved black cat Merlin, whose name was picked by my late wife and whom I'd had longer than any of my cats, passed away unexpectedly.

As I've done every time since becoming a cat daddy, I went out & got a new cat to take my mind off my grief later that month.

Only, wait! (MAS) was doing a 2-fer on the one I chose. So, I came home with 2 orange and white cats.

Two orange and white cats. Carolina Peaches on the kitchen floor, looking up toward the spot Merlin had been sitting on in the earlier picture. And Cassidy on the rug in the dining room looking at Peaches.

I just heard yesterday that Memphis Animal Services is so overwhelmed by kitten season that, for the first time in over 4 years, they are putting healthy cats on the euthanasia list. This is devastating news.

If you're in the area and have any space for a foster cat or to add a new kitty to your family, now is the time to save a life.

Of my current 6 cats, 4 came from MAS. And Merlin did, too.

"If schools become integrated, people with a biblical objection to such situations will face judgement and prejudice for their desire for segregated schools"

This is how Thomas and Alito talk about gay marriage.

"If you let this exist people who think it shouldn't exist will be seen as out of step with progress. "

Just ignoring the whole telling other people how to live aspect. And there is no such thing as a "right" to have your religious ideas seen as progressive. WTF.

timgatewood ,
@timgatewood@mastodon.world avatar

@futurebird First, there is no Biblical basis for any opinions on schools as the Bible is silent on the subject of schools as they did not exist at the time the Bible was assembled.

Second, even if there were such a Biblical basis, that's irrelevant because America is not a Christian country where laws are based on the Bible. It's a secular country where you're allowed to practice your religion as long as you don't interfere with other people practicing their religion or their non-religion.

Just found out T. Kingfisher is publishing a Grimm-inspired book in August and the title is "A Sorceress Comes to Call." Have I downloaded a DRC? YASSS @ursulav

“Silicon Valley’s vigorous promotion of ‘ethical AI’ has constituted a strategic lobbying effort, one that has enrolled academia to legitimize itself. Ito played a key role in this corporate-academic fraternizing, meeting regularly with tech executives.”

@parismarx First, AI is not properly artificial or intelligent. Second, how does a plagiarism algorithm that is based on violating copyright on a massive scale have any claim to ethics? If there were to be AI ethics, these issues would have to be corrected before it is anything other than a bs label.

@rbreich Please remove your content from substack. They are on record recently for supporting Nazis, both giving them a platform and monetizing it. Why would you want your name associated with that?
