I believe the issue moreso is the lack of (funding for) maintenance.

A heatwave like this will exacerbate smaller issues, which could've been prevented.

How is that ironic?

You didn't purchase a "HowToGeek" licence, I imagine. Nor was one included with your PC.

Prosecutors say Alec Baldwin was ‘engaged in horseplay’ with gun before fatal shooting ( www.theguardian.com )

Fewer than three weeks before actor Alec Baldwin is due to go on trial in Santa Fe, New Mexico, prosecutors have said that he “engaged in horseplay with the revolver”, including firing a blank round at a crew member on the set of Rust before the tragic accident occurred....

I mean, cool idea, but that would severely limit the available choices for types of firearms.

Ah yes, very interesting results when the "experiment" was rigged:

The participants in the experiment, who were male college students, didn't just organically become abusive guards, reporter Ben Blum wrote in Medium. Rather, Philip Zimbardo, who led the experiment and is now a professor emeritus of psychology at Stanford University, encouraged the guards to act "tough," according to newfound audio from the Stanford archive.

TL;DR:

Team GB long claimed Lloyd Hildebrand’s silver medal, but because the British citizen competed under French colors, his win is now being credited to France.

Some additional info:

The International Olympic Committee agreed this week to reassign credit for Lloyd Hildebrand’s silver medal in the men's cycling 25 km race at the 1900 Olympics from Britain to France.

[...]

A French historian recently raised Hildebrand’s case to the International Olympic Committee, saying the athlete lived nearly his entire life in France and was closely tied to a sports club there -- and not to one in Britain.

Of course it's a whimper, Timmy wants you to buy your mom an iPhone to chat.

Science is very much an art in and of itself; breaking ground and figuring out how to set up a new process/experiment doesn't come from thin air.

Just because you wouldn't, means people shouldn't be able to? Like, at all? Do with the device they bought as they wish?

The Soviet Union was – claimed to be – communist. That is not the case for Russia.

Much like China now has incorporated many capitalist systems.

That is what the news article says, yes. The article doesn't use any quotes around that line, so I assume it isn't from the original research paper.

Leaked NYT Gaza Memo Tells Journalists to Avoid Words “Genocide,” “Ethnic Cleansing,” and “Occupied Territory” ( theintercept.com )

The New York Times instructed journalists covering Israel’s war on the Gaza Strip to restrict the use of the terms “genocide” and “ethnic cleansing” and to “avoid” using the phrase “occupied territory” when describing Palestinian land, according to a copy of an internal memo obtained by The Intercept....

Regardless of the negative connotations the word should technically have, it's been sorta green washed. It is a noteworthy term to use when it isn't applied elsewhere (e.g. Crimea)

I keep seeing comments about NixOS. As a relative newby just messing around for themselves, is there anything stopping me from/I should know about taking the plunge?

I've only dipped my toe in Ubuntu.

It did! Thank you for sparking the conversation.

Ah, yes. Because a publicly traded company would never look for additional revenue streams atop their high margins.

Oh...

tb_ ,
@tb_@lemmy.world avatar

True, but if those same people they're not supposed to be friends with are the ones inviting them to those events/granting them early access...

In other words: the system is rigged.

Coats, and devices for that matter, used to be built to last and be repairable. But if your customer consumer never needs to buy another product from you now that wouldn't make much business sense would it?

tb_ ,
@tb_@lemmy.world avatar

Personally I don't feel that way, but my personal experience isn't a particularly large sample size.

Consumers may want various things, but those wants aren't created in a vacuum. Otherwise advertising would be pointless.

"We're scaling back in crowded market segments and instead focussing on AI! A totally not crowded segment."

I would've actually been interested in Mozilla's VPN/Footprint scrubbing services as a "trustworthy" company, but they're not even available here yet and by the sound of it never will. Now instead they'll be playing catch-up in another market.

It's difficult to remain excited with news like this, but I want there to be alternatives to Chromium so I'll keep using Firefox.

You'd rather have Trump on the throne?

A vote not cast is a vote in favour of your opposition.

Sadly, in the two party system of the US, the only effective alternative vote is the one for the lesser of two evils. At least there's a chance that one will do some things right.

"females"

tb_ ,
@tb_@lemmy.world avatar

Calling people just "males" or "females" is a little derogatory. They're female politicians, or they're women. They're not "those females over there".

Ever since I've had that pointed out to me it's become a bit of a pet peeve of mine. If we were on Reddit I'd link to r/MenAndFemales, but I don't go to that place anymore.
