Idaho library bans minors from entering without parental consent

This is the context - an Idaho law that penalizes any library that allows minors access to "inappropriate" content, and lets each child's parent define what "inappropriate" means. So libraries could be penalized if, for example, a homeschooled Christian child reads a book on biology that mentions evolution or a YA novel with a...

They probably think that if they're not in the library they're spending their parents money at some store/coffee shop/restaurant. While that will be true for some I imagine the rest will roam around in hordes causing "mayhem". Either that or the church.

No see the first one is a bribe, the second one is a job. I'm paying you for your time! /s

How to split short term and long term VictoriaMetrics storage ( farcaller.net )

I finally got to cleaning up the metrics in my homelab and researched the means to separate my long-term and short-term data. This way you can scrape all kinds of noisy sources (e.g. kubernetes) while having a separate store for things you want to observe on longer time windows (months and years). The best thing? It's...

A little off topic, but on first glance I thought that website was called fart caller.

On topic, I've never Heard of this service. I still haven't setup anything like this. Might give it a try.

talentedkiwi ,

I had just finished rewatching The Pacific. The last few episodes really drive home a fraction of this feeling (empathetically anyway).

YSK : Dark patterns among large companies are becoming more mainstream ( youtu.be )

While it is no secret that exploitative practices are interlaced with capitalistic tendencies, the practices are becoming intolerable. Signing up to pay usually takes only two clicks that are prominently visible whereas cancelation options are hidden away in deep settings requiring multiple clicks. Pricing often feel arbitrary...

I've used freetaxusa the last couple of years. If the IRS one isn't available, then I'd recommend them.

talentedkiwi ,

We've had three yes, but what about 4th crisis?

<Insert meme here or something>
talentedkiwi ,

And waste all that precious piss? I'll just spit

I reckon it has to do with the weight that the workers have to pick up (usually no more than 50 lbs). If they err on the side of none, then people will likely try to put a little in at a time. Then they won't care. I imagine if they say a little is okay, then people will fill the bins/bags with soil. I can hear it now, "It's just a little!"

It looks like it uses chrome for certain data, and I'm not a fan of that. Any idea if I can change that to use Firefox?

talentedkiwi ,

You could try clipping them off instead of pulling them out. Just use a flush cutter (or as close to flush) and cut them down to the wood. This is what most do when taking our trim, as it can cause more damage to get the nails/staples out.

talentedkiwi ,

I agree, that piece on the back of the face got pretty mangled, and glueing it up honestly wouldn't be enough long term.

talentedkiwi ,

Looking at the picture, a regular piece of wood should work as long as the thickness is the same. Otherwise the front will sit a bit proud if thicker, or there will be a gap if thinner. Though you could trim the dado back on the sides if it's thicker. Edit: and make sure to measure size before trying to take it off. Just in case it breaks more.

It looks like that particle board is nailed to the face. Hopefully it isn't glued as well, otherwise it'll be a beast to get off. Those screws are just for the handle and likely have no structural qualities.

Another thought. Try the warranty.

https://www.merillat.com/customer-support/warranty-info.html

Edit: Hmm. Says not transferrable. But I suppose it doesn't hurt to try

talentedkiwi ,

This may sound silly, but have you tried restarting? I feel like that worked for me when I had a similar issue in the past. Something was holding onto the port, but it wasn't showing up anywhere. Restart got it to let go and it worked afterwards.

talentedkiwi ,

Darn.

I suppose you could also try using the lsof command to see if it shows anything different?

Some examples: https://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/unix-linux-check-if-port-is-in-use-command/

talentedkiwi ,

Hopefully someone smarter than me can help. You can always do what I do, and just blow up the install and start fresh. 😂

talentedkiwi ,

Casserole and wild rice brings that to like 95%. The other 5% would be neighboring states

Lots of good suggestions. I've also used memos, but wasn't a huge fan of how the notes were organized. Solid app and definitely worth a look.

https://github.com/usememos/memos

Edit: I'm holding out hope for when notesnook goes self-hosted.

Edit 2: after looking at my older instance I see they save the notes in a database and is not relevant to your question.

talentedkiwi ,

That's defamatory towards potatoes. We can just leave it as dick.

talentedkiwi ,

I'm sorry to have offended you. Maybe we just call him a giant trump (but in like a bad way?)

talentedkiwi ,

I have a feeling they'll make it difficult to use. Then when people do it accidentally because of they're shitty UI, they'll point to that and say, "see?!"

Lawnchair hasn't had a release since 2018. I find it to be a bit buggy and sometimes won't redraw the home screens. This makes me need to force close the launcher from the settings. I usually clear the cache too, just to be safe.

Just tempering expectations for anyone else looking at it. If anyone knows of a fork that is more recent let me know. Maybe someone else is maintaining somewhere.

talentedkiwi ,

I took a peek into their telegram feed and it seems they're working on version 14.

talentedkiwi ,

Oh sweet! Thanks for the heads up! I was hoping to find a version 14 without having to figure out how to build it myself.

talentedkiwi ,

I'm trying one of the Dev releases that was linked below. So far it's pretty stable. Not sure your tolerance for any issues that may arise.

talentedkiwi ,

Oof, purchased by an analytics company probably means they only want it for your/my information.

talentedkiwi ,

They'll probably want some money for them instead.

We could have easily replaced the phone with a magazine, newspaper, or book and chili cheese dog with some other item, and then this story could have been anywhere in the last 200 years.

Unfinished basement shop tips?

Not exactly a woodworking question, but related. I bought an old house and there's a nice spot in the basement for me to set up my shop, but it's completely unfinished. Cinder block walls and concrete floor. As far as I know, if I want to actually finish it, I need a permit and inspections, which seems like a lot of hassle. All...

talentedkiwi ,

You might be able to make some basic framing without any sheating without a permit. Then hang your cabinets on that. Best would be to ask your local permit office though. Any new power runs will need a permit regardless.

However, I will say if you want to do any power wood cutting then you'll want to enclose it real well. (ask me how I know, actually on second thought, don't lol)
