George Orwell - 1984. 'It's a beautiful thing, the destruction of words. Of course the great wastage is in the verbs and adjectives, but there are hundreds of nouns that can be got rid of as well. It isn't only the synonyms; there are also the antonyms."

Things will get better when the current crop of befuddled geriatric leaders die. That generation needs to go. It's like the old Soviet Union when it was ruled by political fossils. They don't have a useful idea in their heads, and want to turn the clock back to their glory days.

Men's average life expectancy in Russia is 69 years and Putin is 71. He'll probably be around for another ten years. He won't be deposed or replaced. He'll die of natural causes, and maybe have his own mausoleum, like Lenin. He'll be revered as a Hero of Russia. He's fit and active and gets the best medical care, so he's got years left in him. I'm sure that Biden will make it to 80 as he's very frail.

photoncollector ,
@photoncollector@mastodon.social avatar

@andrew_bidlaw People in the US also have a low life expectancy and it's falling. In the US it's 76 years for whites, and 73 for blacks.
20 years from now the political scene will be different because of that generation dying out. They're still stuck in 1950's family values and thinking.

photoncollector ,
@photoncollector@mastodon.social avatar

@andrew_bidlaw wow. I didn't know he was that old. I doubt that he's got much time left.

Putin is just one member of the Kremlin elite who control Russia. The war was a collective decision.

Russia can not conquer and hold Ukraine. No one could. I believe that the real purpose behind the war, is to return political control over the Russian population to Stalinist levels, and to undermine Western democracies. Both are achievable and partly done.

They told the Russian population that they could defeat Ukraine very quickly.

SpaceX Starlink terminals openly available on Russian website offered by Chinese drone maker DJI claiming to be an "official distributor" ( www.newsweek.com )

The revelation follows allegations Russian forces are deploying Starlink in their invasion of Ukraine, now in its third year. DJI says it forbids distributors from selling its products in instances of suspected combat end-use. In April 2022, the tech firm announced it was temporarily suspending business in both Russia and...

I am a fluent Russian speaker with a degree in Politics and lived in Russia for years.

Nobody takes the polls seriously. Neither inside nor outside Russia

I get my information from reliable sources in Russia, with whom I am in daily contact.

The two fundamental of Russian thinking.
1, Suffering is inescapable, and must be accepted.
2, A strongman leader is always best, even if he does terrible things to us.

These beliefs have been a constant throughout one thousand years of Russian history

Sure, not every Russian agrees with those beliefs, but the number of those who don't, are so small, as to be effectively zero.

Pure fantasy, but quite an appealing one. Putin's successor has already been selected by Putin and his inner circle. He has been shadowing Putin since before the war. He is a political clone of Putin. When Putin dies the transition will be seamless.
Putin will be remembered as a Hero of Russia.

That's what people said when there was 135, 000 of them on 'manouvers' near Ukraine. Lavrov categorically stated that "We have no intention of invading Ukraine,' as late as 2 days before they invaded. 200km? They could do that in 2 hours or less, easily. Russia has engineered the situation exactly as they did in Donetsk and Donbass. Their intentions are clear.

Two very ruthless men. Quite comfortable having people 'liquidated.' The MAN from China looks scary 😱

Russia begs China for loans as the Kremlin is running out of money for rainy days, analysts say ( charter97.org )

In almost 2 years of full-scale war, Russia has spent half the money from the National Welfare Fund (NWF), the main source of resources for a rainy day. At the end of 2023, almost 4 trillion rubles were spent from the National Welfare Fund, and now only 5 trillion remains in its so-called liquid part (savings in currency and...

Yes, I've been keeping an eye on it. It's not really exchangeable anymore. Technically it is, but nobody outside Russia wants to touch it. It's pretty tough in Russia now. People don't want to spend their money.

Oil refining is barely limping along in Russia. It was always a weakness, but they don't have the ability to repair and maintain the refineries anymore. No parts, no skilled people.

photoncollector ,

Almost all the people who had the skills to do the repairs have either fled the country or died in Ukraine.
