The algorithm of is such a piece of garbage.

I’m slightly interested by the most recent disaster.

But almost all of my feed is made of people I don’t follow who post about it.

It’s awfully annoying, and it reduces the informational value of the app to basically zero.

Me, feeding 2 people and 2 cats on a 60k EUR salary without benefits (because technically self-employed), reading those comments that claim a 501(c)(3) is some kind of nefarious scheme to hide money 😐

@damon @chriswho @QueenieBeanie @Gargron I have a bunch of names in my head. Not all of them were kicked out of Big Social. But they sure all used the ideological leftist inclination of many on Mastodon (including admins) to harass others in ways that wouldn’t have been possible on Big Social.

@damon @chriswho @QueenieBeanie @Gargron Also, the worst abuse I’ve ever received on social media was on Mastodon a year ago, when I said that I have a legitimate use case for quote posts.

And bear in mind that I was harassed on Twitter for years by far left activists.

These ideologues exist on Mastodon. They brigade, harass, and "criticize" based on facts that don’t exist. I don’t see why trying to appease them should be a goal in any way, shape, or form.

The protocol as it now sits will not keep you "safe" from threads in any meaningful way.

Repeat. After. Me.

The protocol as it now sits will not keep you "safe" from threads in any meaningful way.

I don't mean as in "it will not protect from a malevolent actor" sense. I mean in an ordinary, reasonable behavior sense.

not only does not have the tools for this, it makes assumptions that are fundamentally opposed to the kinds of protections that people seem to be seeking.

@hrefna AT Protocol having public blocks make a lot more sense in that regard.

(I’m not claiming ATP is inherently safer than AP. It’s just an observation on why blocks are public on Bluesky.)

I'm currently knee-deep into a rabbit hole about the Tennessee Senate voting a bill to ban check notes .

At first, I wanted to publish a Note on my newsletter about it. But I (unwillingly) gathered enough material on this unhinged bill to write a full article.

Stay tuned.

Flatly, no nonsense: Y'all need help.

https://github.com/snarfed/bridgy-fed/issues

There are better ways to do this than harassment and brigading.

This is the sort of thing that makes me want to run screaming away from the fediverse for any sort of personal project.

I don't care where you land on the ethics of such, this nonsense is wrong.

@hrefna Dear Lord

These people will literally kill the ecosystem if they continue

Lots of Fediverse Admins are making it VERY clear they have a fundamental misunderstanding of how the protocol works and that's VERY worrying....

If you don't even understand how something works, how can you even begin to admin an instance properly?

There's definitely a legitimate reason to defederate from the BlueSky bridge. You may not trust corporations and that's PERFECTLY FINE!

But don't disguise it as some sort "opt-in only stance" because if you're a legit Fediverse admin, you know the Fediverse as a whole is opt-out by design.

Either you know that and are misrepresenting the truth to dogpile on a dev unnecessarily or you don't know that and running an instance is irresponsible of you.....😬yikes...

o_simardcasanova ,
@o_simardcasanova@mastodon.social avatar

@tchambers @BeAware I’m increasingly convinced that the backslash against the bridge is actually a backlash against Bluesky. And more specifically, a very misinformed view of what Bluesky actually is.

o_simardcasanova ,
@o_simardcasanova@mastodon.social avatar

@tchambers @BeAware Also, Mastodon itself relies on corporations

Bluesky is almost fully open source, as Mastodon is

And sure, Bluesky is currently operated by just one company. But federation may change that. And many Mastodon instances and services are also operated by companies.

Refusing to federate with Bluesky because of "corporations" should lead the people who have this stance to also disengage with significant portions of Mastodon. But I’m assuming they don’t.

o_simardcasanova ,
@o_simardcasanova@mastodon.social avatar

@Teri_Kanefield @tchambers @BeAware For what I understand (I only have a superficial understanding of how the bridge works), yes: assuming your Mastodon instance does not block the bridge, people on Bluesky will be able to follow you and to interact with your posts as if they were published on Bluesky directly

I don’t know if it’s possible the other way around though

o_simardcasanova ,
@o_simardcasanova@mastodon.social avatar

@reflex @tchambers @BeAware No, they’re not. These reasons are basically double standards based on some severe misinformation.

If these reasons were valid, the same people who claim to have these reasons would behave very differently than what they currently do. The fact they don’t tell everything we need to know about their seriousness.

o_simardcasanova ,
@o_simardcasanova@mastodon.social avatar

@BeAware @Teri_Kanefield @tchambers Honestly, at this point I would be surprised if he even keeps working on this bridge. At his place, many would give up, me included.

o_simardcasanova ,
@o_simardcasanova@mastodon.social avatar

@BeAware AFAIK, same goes with AT Proto and the bridge
