Algospeak. The voluntary censoring of your own language to satisfy the advertising requirements of corporations who want to monetize your thoughts.

While I do understand the need for language guidelines on platforms, the nearly instant training of TikTok users to avoid or substitute brand-unfriendly language is disgusting.

nik282000 ,
@nik282000@lemmy.ca avatar

My issue with it is that it ONLY serves to satisfy corporate goals, it doesn't actually prevent people from being exposed to ideas or topics that might be distressing or disturbing to some users. It's sucking corporate cock and being proud of it.

@nik282000@lemmy.ca avatar

Using abbreviations or initialisms obscures the meaning from people who are not in the know but does nothing to prevent people who might not want to think about the topic from being exposed to the idea, the code IS the idea. Not using coded language maintains clarity, does not bow down to corporate interest and is just as easily caught by filters for people who do not wish to be exposed to those topics.

DIY Paul Ion (Particle) Trap [oc] ( i.imgur.com )

The two hemispheres are electrically connected to each other and to an AC power supply, the ring is connected to the same AC supply but 180 degrees out of phase. Particles are charged and then injected into the trap, they are then alternately attracted to the ring and hemispheres causing them to oscillate and become trapped! As...

I still have a burned in distrust for everything after W2k. Why does the look have to change at all? Most user's can't find the browser if someone moves the icon let alone change the colour scheme, shape of the start menu and location of settings.

This so hard, we still have XP machines running scada software and seeing the bubbly-blue IU makes it look like a 90's educational game.

W7 was the last version where I felt like a normal user could have full control. I could do updates once a week without having to worry about setting safe hours. Settings weren't duplicated and scattered across multiple locations and UI styles. As far as I remember there were very few un-uninstallable features, it was the OS and what ever the user wanted. No McAffee demo, Candy Crush, OneDrive, XBox, Spotify, etc.

Animated series was 10/10, Adam West was a 9.5, Michael Keaton was a 9. The latest iteration tries to be so gritty and serious that it's more of a parody than Adam West.

Pi.Alert is dead...💀 Long live NetAlert X 🚀 (network monitoring) ( lemmy.world )

After thinking for about a year about it I decided to rename the project to 🚀NetAlertX. This will help prevent confusion about which fork someone is using, and differentiate it from the now stale upstream project. With about 1800 or so commits over the stale project, I thought, this project deserved a new name. It will also...

You can use a pinhole to project an image of the sun onto a sheet of paper but not directly as glasses. Look up a 'pinhole projector' you can make a pretty good one with an Amazon box.

A wind power forecast overestimated the amount of wind power to be generated Friday morning by 800 megawatts, Samaroden said.

When the Keephills 2 natural gas plant west of Edmonton tripped offline two hours later, AESO asked power distribution companies, including Edmonton's Epcor and Calgary's Enmax, to begin rotating outages to their customers, she said.

So the wind turbines still work, there is just not enough of them, but the petro-chemical powered plant, which Alberta continues to tell us is the only real way to supply a grid, failed.

Only if the only point of college is to get a job.

When it comes with that 200K of debt the ONLY point is to get a job. Employers want employees with degrees because degrees come with debt and people who are in debt are less likely to quit a shitty job.

I love Mullvad and recommend them for everything other than torrenting. Once they disabled port forwarding I moved to AirVPN who seem to be pretty legit.

I'm not trying to keep my ratios up but I have a few torrents of media that are not available anywhere for sale and have less than 10 seeds, so I feel like I am helping keep the shows and movies of my childhood alive.

As soon as Google bought YouTube they knew who the users were and everything they did online. This was never not true. Their business is to log all the activity of all internet users, not to make them safe or happy, there is nothing broken in their platform as far as they are concerned.

You expect a cop to understand both the threat and entertainment value of a Defcon talk?

Are you reusing one postgres instance for all services?

I have many services running on my server and about half of them use postgres. As long as I installed them manually I would always create a new database and reuse the same postgres instance for each service, which seems to me quite logical. The least amount of overhead, fast boot, etc....

nik282000 ,
@nik282000@lemmy.ca avatar

I keep each service separate as far as DBs, if something breaks or get a major upgrade I don't have to worry about other containers.

A follow up post retracts the statement and instead suggests the following.

Park vehicles in garage, if possible
Ensure your driveway is well lit and keep exterior lights on all night
Security cameras are an asset
If possible, install a home security system – activate alarm on STAY when home and AWAY when out
Consider having a motion detection alarm connected to your cell phone
Put security film on glass windows and doors
Have multipoint door locks on your doors
Keep backyard gates locked and ground windows secured
Do not post on social media when you will be away on holiday
Report suspicious vehicles/persons in the neighbourhood to police

Defund the police, over and over they are telling us, directly, that this OUR problem not theirs. Put the money into healthcare and public transit.

Our car got stolen last year, the Hamilton police said "call your insurance company."

It took the guy 5 min from opening the door to driving away and as far as I know the only technical part is that they use some hardware to relay the key fob signals. They relay the keyless/proximity unlock signal to get in, then they pair a new fob to the car using the manufactures method. Normally that requires all other paired fobs to be present at the same time BUT they are relaying those signals so the "security" there is bypassed.

The icing on the cake is that the cops didn't even bother to cruise by the next night as the neighbour's car got stolen as well.

Titanfall 2 was the perfect mix of Unreal Tournament and MechWarrior. Of course EA would abandon it to pump 10,000 skins into an arena micro-transaction slot machine.
