ChatGPT is biased against resumes with credentials that imply a disability — but it can improve

"...UW researchers found that ChatGPT consistently ranked resumes with disability-related honors and credentials — such as the “Tom Wilson Disability Leadership Award” — lower than the same resumes without those honors and credentials. When asked to explain the rankings, the system spat out biased perceptions of disabled people..."

"I'm starting to hate Windows Copilot and all the ways in which it's infiltrating my PC even more. I've been using various forms of "AI" since Microsoft rolled out Bing with ChatGPT back in 2023 & I've yet to find a compelling reason to use any of them."

"Long before people develop dementia, they often begin falling behind on mortgage payments, credit card bills and other financial obligations...Credit scores among people who later develop dementia begin falling sharply long before their disease is formally identified. A year before diagnosis, these people were 17.2% more likely to be delinquent on their mortgage payments than before the onset of the disease, and 34.3% more likely to be delinquent on their credit cards." https://www.nytimes.com/2024/05/31/business/economy/alzheimers-disease-personal-finance.html

Now it can be told:

While doing some AI engineering work for a client, I developed a prompt - completely inadvertently - that reduced every AI chatbot to gibberish (except Anthropic's Claude 3). I then spent a week trying to alert the LLM vendors to this issue - and largely failed. There is no mechanism to report flaws in these models that are already deployed to billions of users. An NDA forbids former OpenAI employees, for the rest of their lives, from criticizing their former employer. Even acknowledging that the NDA exists is a violation of it.

We don't need a computer that remembers.

We need more computers that forget.

Yesterday Microsoft automatically updated an eight year-old desktop - one that will never be able to run Windows 11, as the CPU is just too old. When it rebooted I found that it had installed Copilot on the taskbar, and a Copilot panel that will pop out when invoked.

This means we are well and truly entering the time when Copilot rolls out to somewhere around a billion Windows 10 desktops.

“Get it the **** off my system” and “in the trash where it belongs” were common refrains as users voiced their displeasure at having Copilot forced upon them. Numerous reports emerged of people immediately disabling, hiding, or removing the AI assistant.

Science fiction legend Vernor Vinge inspired the title of this podcast - and his influence extends far beyond fiction. Vernor passed away yesterday, so we're re-posting our 2019 conversation - about his prediction of a 'Technological Singularity'.

I guess it's time to point this out again:

Nuclear energy is a ridiculous proposition in Australia, where we receive more sunshine than any other continent;

When the price of solar energy has fallen below 3 cents per kilowatt hour for industrial scale installations;

Where the price of industrial-scale grid-connected batteries is dropping so quickly that all concerns about 'baseload' requirements for nighttime energy needs can be fully and inexpensively addressed.

I repeat: RIDICULOUS.

"People say AI is overhyped, but I think it's not hyped enough. The next generation who will use this in the next few years will have a much higher bar on what technology can do for them. So how you build it for that generation, how you build it for that future will be really interesting to see. AI is truly a general purpose technology, which can change everything that we do," says the Microsoft India and South Asia head, Puneet Chandok.
