Let’s talk .

There’s a lot of analysis out there that I believe is driven by a fundamental misunderstanding of the way fights wars.

Bottom line up front: Russia’s current goals in Ukraine aren’t necessarily victory, at least not in the traditional military sense.

We’ve seen evidence of this since even before Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014. More on that later.

In my view his goal is more to weaken everybody else, particularly the US, Europe, and neighbors. Division is the best way to do this. Keeping countries out of NATO and keeping NATO weak is a part of that. But the EU is the real source of prosperity and that is what he most fears. But he knows NATO is not a threat to Russia, it's only a threat to his imperial ambitions. His stated fear of NATO troops on their borders is just him not wanting neighbors to be safe and stable in any way
