Where I live, there is just one garbage truck, which picks up all the garbage from all houses in a large neighborhood. It is both cheap and efficient.

Yet for some reason, 8 different delivery companies drive the same streets to bring out parcels, and at least 10 different companies deliver food.

Something tells me, we have not found the optimal way to do this yet.

Idioms are funny.

Since as early as 1908 in Denmark, when something changes, we have said, "there are new balls on the soup".

This expression stems from the fact that when making a soup traditionally, there would be a step where you added the meatballs and dumblings to it, and the choice of balls very much changed the soup you were serving. So to put balls "on the soup" literally was the process of introducing a change.

Is that idiom also used in your language or is this a Danish thing only?

@randahl Closest thing which immediately comes to mind is "das Salz in der Suppe sein" i.e. being the salt in the soup, so being the most important ingredient.

For instance, in Denmark I would say the Danish right-wingers are very much organised on X, while the apolitical are often Instagram users.

@randahl I'm from Germany, but living in Switzerland - wasn't sure what you were aiming at with your question. When talking about Mastodon, I usually get blank stares, so I guess being on Mastodon is an outlier. HTH!
