m0darn , to politics in Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall says he won't prosecute IVF families, providers

Also, if he doesn't prosecute anyone for it, then it nobody has standing to challenge it.

m0darn , to Work Reform in Make no mistake, the owning class is actively working against your interests

I'm not so you were previously engaged with, and am fortunate enough to be in a similar boat to you.

I would just like to point out that in the context of having a conversation with a 13 year old, starting with working class solidarity is a good idea. I think the next step in that conversation is (for people in situations like ours) to acknowledge the factors that have led to our success, and agree that our privileges don't mean we should abandon our less fortunate peers to exploitation. We should still seek an equitable world.

m0darn , to Men's Liberation in Why Won’t Men Wear Hot Pink While Hunting? - More states adopt the color alongside orange, but opinions aren’t all rosy

Homophobia is literally beaten into men. Not all men obviously, but we shouldn't be surprised when some men act irrationally around wearing pink.

I haven't read the article though because of the pay wall.

m0darn , to Canada in Ordering workers back to the office a 'power grab' by bosses, research suggests

I think it's more likely a way to get a portion of your employees to resign without having to deal with the socio-econo-political headache of layoffs or give severance packages.

It doesn't boost productivity, but it may cut payroll.

m0darn , to politics in Maryland bill would force gun owners to get $300K liability insurance to wear or carry

Hey I'm not sure this was your intention but the way you passed your response feels like you're criticizing me.

It makes it hard to respond without seeming like I'm on the defensive. But for example, I am grateful to live in a country with more sane gun laws than the USA. I do things normal^tm^ citizens do. I also happen to know normal^tm^ people that own guns. How do I know them? By participating in hobbies (with them). Like yeah I agree not many people need to own guns but a lot do, and if you want to improve the gun situation in the USA there are some legal and political realities you'll have to work within.

m0darn , to politics in Maryland bill would force gun owners to get $300K liability insurance to wear or carry

I agree, the point is that it's awkward for someone to oppose this policy because they're kind of confessing to being irresponsible.

m0darn , (edited ) to politics in Maryland bill would force gun owners to get $300K liability insurance to wear or carry

A bit about me for context: I'm Canadian, I have an interest in guns. I do not own any guns. I can imagine myself owning a gun, but don't want one right now. I know a bit about guns, but not a lot. eg Rim fire vs center fire, and that there isn't anything specific that makes a rifle an assault rifle. I support gun regulation but think Canada's recent changes go too far (it's now impossible for a normal citizen to legally obtain a handgun in Canada).

My two cents on this bill:

  1. Every responsible gun owner ought to have liability insurance that covers their firearms regardless of whether or not it's required.

  2. Objections to such requirements based on the cost of insurance could be overcome in a few ways. Two that occur to me off the top of my head:

    a. Individual insurance could be not necessary if the citizen is a member of a well regulated militia (but the state could define what qualifies as a well regulated militia, maybe: shared liability, annual training)

    b. The state could offer tax payer funded insurance, for gun owners that agree to certain conditions e.g. gun use, storage (and inspections)

I look forward to the comments.

m0darn , to Men's Liberation in A muscle-building obsession in boys: What to know and do - Harvard Health

One of the kids in my 5yo son's after school program (jiu-jitsu) asked him why his belly is big.

His belly is not big. He's actually pretty lean (much leaner than his father and noticeably leaner than his younger brother).

It upset him enough that he told me about it. At least we could have a good talk about body health and other people's expectations.

m0darn , to politics in The Republicans Actually Want a Border Crisis

Yeah I'm also interested in reducing barriers to migration from a human rights perspective.

But I think we need to reduce international disparities in standard of living before open borders would really work.

I think trade penalties against countries with high degrees of wealth concentration and/or without living wage regulations etc might help. Idk.

m0darn , to CSCareerQuestions in People who are 30+, what career moves do you regret in your 20s and/or what choices are you happy you made?

I regret not taking my suspicions that I had adhd more seriously.

Ie I suspected I had adhd when I was in my early 20s now that I'm in my mid-late 30s and getting sorted out, I can sometimes daydream about how different my career could have been if I'd been firing in all cylinders the whole time. I don't day dream for very long though, I've got things to do.

m0darn , to politics in The Republicans Actually Want a Border Crisis

As a Canadian I also sometimes envy the opportunities that exist in the USA but I absolutely would not want Canada to be a 51st (& 52nd?) state. (Not would I actually seek to move there)

You do know that even though they have capitalism in Mexico, it doesn't trickle down to benefit any of the people there, right?

Yes, this is an inherent challenge with capitalism (capital concentration).

I just do not understand why every concept that might work always has to be questioned this way as if it was anymore ridiculous or intolerable than he current migrant situation at the border.

I mean I think it's important to question ideas before implementing them, but you're right that your country (and mine) have some serious challenges to tackle with respect to migration. Mexico also struggles with migration across its southern (and coastal?) border(s).

It looks like in 2013 about 60% of Mexicans favoured forming a single country with the USA (if doing so would improve their standard of living). That data is over 10 years old and a lot has changed since then but honestly it's higher than I would have thought.

m0darn , to politics in The Republicans Actually Want a Border Crisis

51st state? How about 51-65th state? Have you ever spoken to a Mexican that lives in Mexico?

It's pretty clear the mexican population would rather be part of our country, and not separated by all these barriers.

It's not at all clear that that's the case.

And once, most of western America WAS part of Mexico.

Maybe you should give those lands back to Mexico. Way fewer people would be changing countries than if Mexico joined the USA.

allow our capitalism to help put money into the coffers of the people of mexico

You know that they have capitalism in Mexico too right?
