Is this a creepy idea for a school assignment or a cool idea?

Make Your Own Doomsday Library

You are going to live in space, or in a bunker and you will only have the materials you can assemble on a 1GB hard drive. Make a list of the books and materials you would bring and assemble your emergency library.

Optional: Create a device for reading your library that will last as long as possible.

It's an interesting exercise and might even be useful.

@futurebird The Martian covers going through the limited library people were able to take to space, so maybe just call it 5 years in space library and allow them to get updates at Voyager connection rates

Remind them they'll have to share the connection, so they only get it for a few hours a week

I decided to find out if any progress had been made on the science behind why some ants are attracted to electrical fields. After filtering out exterminators (it's so demoralizing to search for information on creatures you love and find nothing but people who know nothing about them boasting about how they will kill them all) I found what looked like a blog. But, who the heck is "James Brown"? Never heard of the dude. Maybe he could be my new friend if he likes ants enough to blog about them!

@futurebird search engines have value when they can help us find useful resources and results, when they just find dreck they have no value

except that search engines are really just eyeball gatherers for advertising tech ... :(

If you see a new youTube channel with a plain sounding name like "NatureView" or "BrightScience" etc. and there is what looks like a tempting video on a specific education topic "Most Active Volcanoes" or "Incredible Carnivorous Plants"

There is a 50/50 chance it will be a generated voice with stock footage and a script written by GPT.

I am now avoiding videos if I don't recognize the creator, or don't see signs it was made by a person.

So much spam!

@futurebird stuff created by humans can perpetuate inaccurate information ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lemming#Misconceptions ), but AI collects misinformation like a conspiracy theorist hoarder then blends inaccurate data to create more misinformation

:: When the ants first developed written language it was natural that they would use pheromones. But, recording scents on paper presents many challenges. Some pheromones are volatile and may dominate an entire page— others decay or change meaning over time. So the ants developed textured patches, little squares each designed to best absorb and preserve a particular pheromone— what was even better was that the specificity of these many textures made it possible to revive old volumes. 1/

Steve asks appeals court to allow him to remain out of prison while he fights contempt of Congress conviction

Bannon filed an emergency motion asking the U.S. Court of Appeals for Washington, D.C., to overrule a lower court’s ruling that ordered him to report to prison on July 1.

Don Jr was too dumb to crime 8 years ago yesterday

As @emptywheel reminds us in her "Ball of Thread" podcast ( working with @GottaLaff ) that on June 9th 2016 Don Jr met with Russian operatives in Trump tower to collude with Russia for the election ( along with Kushner and Manafort )

Have you ever stopped listening to or trusting a person who posts information in media, or online because of a "red flag" ?

That is are there certain topics, habits, actions etc. that instantly decrease your trust in a person you might have otherwise listened to on a podcast, article, or video?

Are there any "green flags" that build trust?

lufthans ,
@lufthans@mastodon.social avatar

@futurebird * knowledge and passion about a topic ( being a geek for something )[0] is a green flag, gets my respect even if it's something I don't care about

  • a positive relationship with multiple communities

  • perspective that I can learn from

  • communicates in a way I can learn from, e.g. a level I can understand, translation ...

[0] some topics might not be a green flag even if I respect the geekery and some topics, e.g. purveyor of conspiracy theories, are red flags unto themselves

Was there any story, or example that started this Trump line that he keeps repeating about people from "prisons and mental institutions" "flooding the country" ?

I mean he has a point, there are so many they are even former presidents...

But seriously... was there anything that started it or is it just totally made up without even a single distorted example?

lufthans ,
@lufthans@mastodon.social avatar

@futurebird it seems that he often just makes stuff up and then people backronym a story to fit it

“We see you haven’t voted yet. Your voting record is public,” a recent mailer to Texas Republicans says. “Your neighbors are watching and will know if you miss this critical runoff election. We will notify President Trump if you don’t vote. You can’t afford to have that on your record.”

The thing about a "strong" "leader"? Eventually you'll be the one targeted when things get desperate enough. No matter how much you think you are the kind of person who wouldn't be.

What is the best explanation you’ve heard for 1 not being a prime number? For me it’s “because it breaks everything in my programs since the loops won’t terminate” but that’s obtuse. “Because the God of math decrees it so!” is compelling, but shallow.

“it can only be divided by 1 distinct number” is contrived.

1 “feels” prime— it has the fewest factors. (Primeness being about NOT having factors) ruling it out for having too few? eh.

“it’s the zero of multiplication” is better… thoughts?

lufthans ,
@lufthans@mastodon.social avatar

@futurebird heard Queen guitarist and physicist Brian May talk about making the stomping part for We Will Rock You. They had a few people do the stomping and clapping, then he looped them. For the loops he added delays. The delays were prime numbers in order to avoid harmonics

Math is a language we create to describe the universe, so what do we need prime numbers to be for the construct of our language?

I recall prime being itself and 1 as only factors rather than itself and its evil twin :)

Let's be clear. Arizona's Supreme Court knocking reproductive rights back to 1864 is a direct result of Donald Trump keeping his promise to appoint U.S. Supreme Court Justices who would overturn Roe v. Wade.

lufthans ,
@lufthans@mastodon.social avatar

@rbreich it's a result of the Koch brothers financing former governor Doug Ducey to expand, then stack the Arizona Supreme Court

McConnell rigging the US Supreme Court was instrumental, but the proximate cause was Ducey's actions

2 of the AZ Supreme Court justices are on the ballot in November, they should be voted out

Also, there's an initiative to add reproductive rights to the Arizona constitution. Arizonans should sign it, then vote for it
