I just went on a follow-fest for women with a PhD, but realized I'm already mutuals with almost everyone who shows up in the limited search results 😋

If you're a Dr. Gal or other female science communicator type, pop into the thread, say hi!

I'd love to learn about what you do 💜
(and I'm sure lots of others would too)

I've never been able to get into Stoicism, but I still like reading about different philosophies. However, I also know that that is one where a lot of popular works deviate badly from the original.

So, a question: are Ryan Holiday's books solid/accurate? Are they in line with ancient Stoic philosophy? Are they a purely modern interpretation? Are they worth reading for growing my non-expert knowledge (in a positive, not just critiquing, way)?

@wendypalmer @aehdeschaine @bookstodon Seconding these recommendations! I also like William Irvine’s Guide to the Good Life.

UPDATE: Not my biliary system but a stealth UTI! I’m home with oral antibiotics after having some IV antibiotics in the hospital.

Hello from the ER where I finished signing my autumnal mitosis while waiting for tests and IV antibiotics. My biliary system is misbehaving again.

What’s the most horrible noise you can make? I can hum and whistle at the same time and it is… not good

    • A long wait at my GP’s yesterday meant I finished my autumnal mitosis sampler except for signing. I’ll be writing a pattern for this one!

"Gen Z is bringing back reading," says The Week, which leads us to wonder what the heck it is we've been doing all these years. But, the publication explains, it's not just reading — it's real books, made of paper. Per research published in @TheConversationUS: "Gen Zers and millennials prefer books in print over e-books and audiobooks" which has manifested in an "unlikely love affair with their local libraries." Here's a breakdown of what might be happening. We want to know: How do you like to read these days?

@CultureDesk @TheConversationUS @bookstodon I have fallen in love with the Libby app since I read a lot of fiction. But for nonfiction I usually prefer paper so I can mark things up. I will buy novels on paper if I think I might read it repeatedly, or if I know the text design is important. And poetry I always read on paper because how it sits on the page is so important.
