We have solar but found another option, push reel mowers was perfect for our small yard. It's a bit more of effort if the grass is tall (we have UC Verde drought tolerant grass so I let it grow out to cut down on watering) but I don't ever have to worry about batteries or gas/fumes/noise. Plus I get a workout and it was basically the only type of mower that's still made domestically.

Can attest the Amish-made ones are built like tanks and run smooth (provided the grass is on the shorter side)

Accidental cutaway of hole drilled with spade bit. Also is 2x3/4" plywood a good vise jaw idea? ( lemmy.world )

I was checking to see how a 3/4" dog hole would look in a vise jaw made from two 3/4" pieces of plywood. Just clamped for the test, but would be glue for the real thing. Interesting to see the hole opened up. And luckily no splitting, but do you think it would work as an actual vise jaw? This is for a Veritas quick release front...

Depends on the type of work, but you may want something denser down the road if you find you're cranking down on a narrow piece and it's flexing. Even something with more plies like Baltic birch might give you more mass, but I've only ever used hardwoods for my vises so can't say for sure.

Also recommend those cork/rubber jaw liners for added grip.

MSFT has a $3T market cap and $60B of free cash flow each year, so I doubt they're hurting for money. This is how "growth at all costs" incentivizes myopic decision-making and doesn't really help foster an environment where studios are willing to take creative risks. Even when they succeed (a la Hi-Fi Rush) they're on the perpetual chopping block.

Tesla Lays Off Entire Team Behind Brakes ( www.theonion.com )

AUSTIN, TX—In the latest round of layoffs for the company’s struggling automotive division, electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla fired the entire team behind brakes, sources confirmed Wednesday. “As we continue to rightsize the Tesla workforce, we have come to the decision that stopping the car is no longer a critical...

100%, he delivered on that campaign promise. You can see the direct result in climate investment following the passage of these acts. In addition to protecting millions of acres of public land and strengthening existing regulations. I always find it disingenuous when people say both parties are the same, because one is actually trying to address climate change while the other is accelerating it.

$6.4B for HashiCorp on the heels of $4.6B for Apptio and $34B for Red Hat back in 2018. I wonder how long until they expect each of these acquisitions to be accretive?

karpintero ,

That's cool, I hope you can make it happen. My pipe dream is to build a small timber frame cabin for myself and a canoe to go with it. I'd also like to contribute more (time-wise and monetarily) to some non-profits/environmental causes I feel strongly about. And about a dozen or so half-finished fullstack projects I'd like to pick back up on. Oh and read a lot, maybe try writing.

Lately I've been investing more in my hobbies rather than socking it all away for retirement. I want to develop the skills for them now (before fitness and dexterity become an issue) and make use of them as I get older, even if it means delaying FIRE a bit. Plus it gives me something to look forward to during the week.

Had the fortune of seeing them live. They were fantastic, highly recommend. Ron also brought up one his students to play a song with the band and you can tell he's a great teacher too.

Recently moved over to porkbun after dealing with a couple billing issues with namecheap and not getting the best customer service. Been pretty happy so far.

𝘊𝘩𝘪𝘢 𝘥𝘢𝘢𝘒𝘸𝘰𝘬𝘸𝘦𝘺𝘦𝘩, or North Sentinel Island, home of one of Earth’s few other groups of 𝘏𝘰𝘮𝘰 𝘴𝘢𝘱𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘴 (1240×904) ( upload.wikimedia.org )

Most humans, including you, belong to the 99.9999% of Homo sapiens that are isolated from the much smaller isolated groups left. North Sentinel Island, which is nominally governed by India, is home of one of the very few smaller ones. Its locals number in the few hundreds and have likely been there and rejected outsiders for...

They're known for launching spears and arrows at visitors, but their aversion towards outsiders might be what's keeping them from going extinct. Other tribes have been decimated by disease after contact. Hopefully others continue to respect their independence.

Great idea, jotted down a list of things I've found to be impactful over the past year, some of them overlap with what's already been posted.

  • Installed solar panels (according to my app, last year they produced enough MWh to equal 8.5 tons of CO2)

  • Trade in our ICE car for an EV (in a year has avoided 5.5 tons of CO2)

  • Insulated our house (attic and walls) coupled with double-pane windows. Cuts down on AC and furnace usage immensely and makes the house much more pleasant overall

  • Prefer 100% cotton clothing/avoid synthetic materials

  • Installed a Lint-Luv-R microplastic filter on our washing machine

  • Shop at refillable container store and avoid single-use plastic where possible

  • Eat more plant-based food, e.g. oat milk, rice, tofu, beans, noodles, etc.

  • Install a rain diverter in our downspouts to collect rain water

  • Reusable diapers if you have an infant/toddler. Diaper waste piles up fast

  • Run/walk to the gym and grocery store

  • Prefer items made in North America versus overseas (cargo ships burn bunker fuel )

  • For coffee, I bring a travel cup and ask if they can fill that instead of a plastic cup (iced) or cup with a plastic lid (hot)

  • Donate to reputable environmental organizations

  • Replace landscaping with native plants, allow pollinators to do their thing

  • Vote for the world you want to live in and pass on: with your time, dollar, and ballot

karpintero ,

Not sure what you are suggesting the better alternative would be? Scrap it? Whoever purchased the used vehicle could have bought a new car instead (which would have required more raw materials for processing).

One common issue I noticed among environmentalists is they argue with each other about what the perfect solution should be instead of just starting somewhere. Any progress is better than nothing at the rate the climate is changing and such progress tends to compound over time.

karpintero ,

100%. Seems like phones continually get worse under the guise of "progress". No more headphone jack or removable battery, more bloated software, anti-privacy assistants/AI. Switched to a Sony Xperia for the headphone jack alone and it's been great, I hope they don't follow this AI trend or else I'm out.

karpintero ,

That would be cool. I use linux as my daily driver, but occasionally switch to windows for certain programs like SketchUp. It would be nice to not have to switch

karpintero ,

I'm glad you guys took a measured approach. This right here is the difference between a corporation and Lemmy. I can't imagine a for-profit reversing its decision in the interest of the community unless it affected their bottom line or stock price. Hats off to the admin team for working through all these complex issues.

karpintero ,

Oat milk has been our favorite hands down. We keep Oatly Barista stocked for lattes, its taste and texture are spot on. Even does latte art pretty well, though mine often looks more like abstract art...
