Mastodon lets you download your complete post archive, so that you have a personal offline copy of all your account's posts and attachments. I've done a guide to downloading your Mastodon archive here:

➡️ https://fedi.tips/how-to-download-your-mastodon-post-archive

However, I need your help! Can you suggest ways for non-technical people to view their post archives? There's no official viewer, and the only viewers I could find were aimed at techy people.

@FediTips I don't understand what the big red line in the screenshot is showing.

@FediTips Oh, so for a transfer, you need to click on ALL the 'CSV' links to get each different type of data?

joachim ,

@FediTips Urrrrrgggh. That is REALLY bad UX.

@FediTips What I also meant is that downloading 5 different files to port your account is rubbish. Why not ticky boxes to select which bits you want and then a single zip file?

"Enshittification" isn't just a way of describing the symptoms of platform decay: it's also a theory of the mechanism of decay - the means by which platforms get shittier and shittier until they are a giant pile of shit.

@kgoldsholl @pluralistic Also, the way that companies have converted their sites to platforms. E.g. B&Q, a chain of UK DIY shops, used to have a website that sold their stuff. It was fine. You could buy the things that they also sold in their shops. Now it's a PLATFORM and it lists products sold by loads of random other firms. There's no guarantee of quality, no idea who you're dealing with if things go wrong.

@FediTips Hi, how does one search for other instances when one doesn't know their names/addresses?

joachim ,
@joachim@drupal.community avatar

@FediTips @Penguinflight Looks great, but I've got to say, why isn't this all automatic?

joachim ,
@joachim@drupal.community avatar

@FediTips What I mean is that servers could output some sort of standardized information with description, tags, etc, and that could be collected automatically.
