One day I am going to sort out my dry goods shelves and get rid of all the half-used obscure processed grains and such that "don't go off”, and it's going to be great.

No more half-braised sugar-free organic tapioca maize packets taking up space!

@philip_cardella I have never seen golf live so I cannot judge, but I see your point.

Today in Labor History February 27, 1902: John Steinbeck was born on this date in Salinas, California. He wrote numerous novels from the perspective of farmers and working-class people, including “The Grapes of Wrath,” “Tortilla Flats” “Of Mice and Men,” “Cannery Row,” and “East of Eden.” In 1935, he joined the communist League of American Writers. He faced contempt charges for refusing to cooperate with HUAC. The FBI and the IRS harassed him throughout his career. Yet he wrote glowingly about U.S. troops during the Vietnam War. He won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1962 and the Pulitzer in 1939.

@MikeDunnAuthor He expressed that re: Vietnam because he was worried about his son, who was in combat. He recanted before he died.

@ariadne @Miro_Collas @pvonhellermannn Biden is absolutely failing to use his influence and I don't think it's fatalism. Unfortunately I think he genuinely supports the Israeli government, and also is afraid of political backlash in the election. BUT we also can't underestimate how much the Israeli right thrives on their persecution complex, and the fact that Netanyahu knows this war is keeping him out of jail. So I really question whether Biden could stop this with a phone call. But FFS he should still try.

@ariadne @Miro_Collas @pvonhellermannn My guess is he has the Leon Uris view of Israel from way back in the day, in which the Irish liberation struggle and early Zionism were linked. Ironic because of course Irish nationalists have long identified the Palestinian cause as their own. Also that he sees Israel as an important democratic [sic] ally in the Middle East. I don't think it's mercenary for him. He just happens to be wrong.

@philip_cardella I would argue it can be, and was, both that most of the justices were trying to preempt the USSR and that they actually believed these rulings were correct and just Constitutional law.

@philip_cardella Right, I'm not saying that A. all the justices were good people or B. only talking about Brown among their transformative cases. Motivations are very rarely one thing. And Brennan was on the Warren court starting in the mid '50s.

@philip_cardella Agreed that it's very much not clear it's their job. The Warren years appear to have been a massive anomaly in the way the Court functioned vis-a-vis the legislature and the public. Absolutely we should be able to count on our elected representatives (sigh) more than a nondemocratic body. I am also in favor of major changes to the way SCOTUS is chosen and runs.

This is a disgrace. The Trader Joe's CEO will be hearing from me. And I will try not to shop there for the foreseeable future (which sucks, because I love Trader Joe's).
