    @epidiah i have a feeling you’re already aware of Iain Banks’ The Culture series but it always strikes me as a deeply thought-out deconstruction of Star Trek

    Vinge’s A Fire Upon the Deep also gives me similar vibes. where Banks’ deconstruction of Trek is kinda political/philosophical, Vinge’s is more high-concept: what if Star Trek had to maintain a minimum level of science fiction “hardness” without discarding stuff like warp drive or intelligent computers?

    My fediverse tip: do not tag the person who boosted the post in your comment. Please.

    @loren my app doesn’t have a way to turn it off 😭

    i try to remember to untag people if i don’t think they’ll appreciate it but i still forget

    that said i kinda like when people tag me on replies to boosts if it’s a good reply, it’s nice to know people see what i boost, otherwise im just kinda firing the boosts off into the void

    weirdly it is the most customizable app i tried by far, but it weirdly doesn’t seem to have a toggle for this.

    Started and finished season one of over the last week or so.

    DAMN that’s some good shit.

    jepyang OP ,

    I mean, it checks several of my personal boxes—

    • ontological mystery
    • post-apocalyptic lost technology
    • crisis in a closed ecosystem
    • interesting world-building
    • intrigue coming out the wazoo

    —but I think it’s pretty compelling TV independent of those factors. High production value…which has not been the case for a lot of recent SFF prestige TV, IMHO.

    Dune 2 is a movie that happened

    jepyang OP ,
    @jepyang@wandering.shop avatar

    It’s still weird to me that it didn’t premiere on streaming like the first one

    I don’t even really know how to get excited about movies in theatres any more tbh

    jepyang OP ,
    @jepyang@wandering.shop avatar

    I saw Barbie in a theatre. Was not excited about going to a theatre, but there was enough hype and personal interest that I wanted to see it sooner rather than later.

    I also saw Godzilla Minus One in a theatre, which I was actually excited about doing I suppose. But there it was like…if I don’t go see it during opening week in a theatre, who knows when I’ll get another chance. So it was more like, ok, I gotta see it on a big screen and it is Godzilla, so I may as well be excited about it.

    jepyang OP ,
    @jepyang@wandering.shop avatar

    Oh I also saw a documentary about beavers in a museum imax theatre, which was cool but uh not quite the same as trying to get excited about seeing a Dune movie without Jason Momoa

    jepyang OP ,
    @jepyang@wandering.shop avatar

    Beavers are really fkn cool
