My 4-year-old daughter has yet to meet a scary story that she didn't like, and incorporates details into the description of her imaginary sister, who is a hundred years old, nine feet tall, has long long teeth, and eats whole pigs alive. Starting with the butt.

I think her imaginary friend is Baba Yaga.

There needs to be a curated space for creator owned and published RPGs again. The problem is that takes… well… curation and moderating which is a lot of (thankless) work.

Along similar lines I'm having trouble finding an artist who can work in charcoal and graphite (or at least digitally simulate that). The hazards of having niche art requirements.

I saw someone say 2016 broke some people's brains over the idea someone like Trump could become president and "the moral arc of justice" was not a guaranteed thing.

Which speaks, I think, to a certain white-centric obliviousness about American history and right-wing political culture specifically, as well as a practiced apathy toward "culture war" issues they assumed would be permanently solved by the courts.

jburneko ,
@jburneko@dice.camp avatar

@gwynnion Not just solved by the courts but solved by age. That there are extreme right-wing 27 year olds is mind blowing to me. I just kind of assumed anyone born past the 60s wouldn’t be racist. Anyone born past the 70s wouldn’t be sexist. Anyone born past the 80s wouldn’t be homophobic. And so on…

You have no idea how stoked I am, that I got the Sorcerer Diagram functional in Foundry.

    @epidiah I know one thing you’re supposed to do is break out format from fonts and use a kind of inheritance thing in CSS but when I have to add mysterious align and justify statements and oddly specific padding and margin numbers I’m not going to risk breaking things with a re-organization. I’ll just repeat my font values a dozen times, thanks.

    It's been a minute; let's do this again:

    If you are a Tabletop RPG nerd and have less than, say, 500 followers (or think you have less than 500 that are actually active):

    1. Write a post to introduce yourself and your particular nerdery, if you haven't already got one pinned.

    2. Reply in the comments with a link to or copy of that post.

    3. Share, check back to find people you want to follow, all that.

    @LeviKornelsen I updated my intro at the beginning of the year.

    Technically, just updated it again to reflect the current work situation.

    The single most important thing RPG theory has ever done is to make it obvious that the GM and group often deserve much more of the credit for a good session than the game does.

    This is then seen as cause to rush off and write better games, which deserve more of the credit.

    Which, I mean, cool, but also, hang on a second.

    @LeviKornelsen It's like a violin maker trying to take credit for the concert. Like, yeah, be proud of the quality of your craft. The concert isn't possible and is better because of your craft. But it's still not your concert.

    @epidiah When I got into programming for the Foundry VTT, I knew nothing of HTML and CSS and took this online video course.

    @epidiah I'm currently implementing a Foundry system module for Sorcerer and I am right there with you. Having to code up both the Sorcerer sheet and the Demon sheet using CSS. There's like stuff that's virtual identical between the two sheets that I have to structure entirely differently because some element in the middle suddenly changes everything?

    @LeviKornelsen Are there no culture clashes as well?

    LeviKornelsen , to random
    @LeviKornelsen@dice.camp avatar

    Tabletop gamerdom is, historically, largely defined by bespoke, hand-crafted folk art remixes of prior material, all the way back to Wesely, Arneson, and Gygax.

    Trying to figure how the widespread, strong reactions both in favor of and against AI, which is industrialized machine remix, are entangling with subcultural values on that topic is odd.

    It feels like they should connect all over the place, but aren't, that much? Like, there's compartmentalization or something on that score?

    jburneko ,
    @jburneko@dice.camp avatar

    @LeviKornelsen This is because we recognize that the corporation has no personal connection with this decision. It's not coming from their values (right or wrong) it's just coming from what they think will sell and we recognize their mass cultural reach has more (unconsidered) impact that rando hot-vampire guy.

    Unfortunately, some people have not actually internalized this distinction and see them as both the same. This is how online harassment happens.

    @LeviKornelsen If you’re framing what the GM is doing as “labour” you’re GMing wrong.

    All over the internet I see people basically asking the following question, "What's a good RPG to play with people who are hostile to my interests?" Like... why are you even asking that question... maybe, don't play with people hostile to your interests?

    @LeviKornelsen When you point at a lot of the bad things about Capitalism a lot of libertarians will deflect and says that isn't "real" capitalism by pointing out some bad government policy or action that propped up the bad thing. They're pretty bought into the idea that you can have Capitalism without Empire for example.

    I think I'm at the point where if I look at an RPG setting and I can't tell how the PCs are socially situated within it and what issues of ordinary human value they'll be grappling with, I just can't engage it.

    Exploration and discovery isn't enough.

    It's a new year, so I figured I'd write another / .

    I live in Long Beach which is part of the Greater Los Angeles Sprawl.

    Professionally, I work in video game development. Currently, I maintain old games already in release.

    I believe in play as a folk artform and instrument for personal expression. I believe good design comes out of good play. My games tend to have Gothic and psychological horror themes.
