getting into bonsai exposes you to related arts like Suiseki, which is basically an elevated version of 'this is a cool rock, check out this rock'

i went looking for more examples and this was one of my favourite cool rocks, a type of waterfall stone. (source: https://bonsaitonight.com/2017/06/16/selections-japans-top-100-suiseki-world-bonsai-convention/ )

i saw the most perfect bee today

ignova ,
@ignova@mstdn.ca avatar

@loren i think it's a carpenter bee? (judging by the fuzzy thorax and shiny butt [abdomen].) those things are badass. they can drill a perfectly round hole several inches deep into a deck rail in one afternoon. which is pretty incredible for something that only weighs about a gram or two.

FYI, someone just asked me, "Could you please put a CW on those US politics posts?"

I said no sorry,, just mute me.

I don't understand CWing political posts. And that doesn't mean you need to @ me explaining why. I know THEIR reasons, I just disagree with them and won't do it.

I respect CWs for other things, but not politics. Politics is news and people need to be aware of what's happening. It's not gory or violent, it's politics.

Kthxbye.

ignova ,
@ignova@mstdn.ca avatar

@artemesia @GottaLaff the culture around CWs is a small example of how the modern left has moved away from liberation and towards attempting to control everything people say and do in their personal lives. that's one of the reasons i also push back on it. it's courtesy to CW something like graphic violence, descriptions of sex abuse, or other extreme content that could blindside you on a public bus. but politics is not extreme. eye contact is not extreme. pictures of food are not extreme.

went back to the arboretum with the good camera. there were dozens of crabapples there in various stages of bloom. this one was one of my favourites.

white blossoms on another tree. i love the mix of white blooms and pink buds.

trying to focus manually on that little redbud flower as it bounced around in the wind was god-tier difficulty

and finally, we walked through the trillium forest. for some reason we get a lot of pink colour morphs of white trilliums. they're not quite as showy as the red trilliums, but a neat curiosity all the same.

@flexghost honestly this might be the best outcome? having the propaganda engine simply change hands is hard to see as a W, but killing it could be.

Thank the lord for Tish James. If you look at the research she did into this bond it made my head spin and I'm a math teacher. She understands all of these fancy finance games, and I guess you'd need to do her job in NYC. We have the worst/best "banking wizards" sometimes they break the laws of physics, sometimes they just break laws.

This bond is a stinker. I wonder what Trump promised the guy to let his company implode as sacrifice to avoid the full fee?

@futurebird 'Hankey told Reuters that he didn’t expect the legal and media scrutiny that came with putting up Trump’s bond. “We thought it would be an easy procedure that wouldn’t involve other legal problems and it’s not turning out that way,” he said.'

i.e.

'We thought it would be easy to bullshit the court in one of the most important trials of the century. Somehow it wasn't. Weird!'

cold frame update: the plants are tall enough to graduate to the 'hamburger lid' (another tub flipped upside down, and secured with clamps). so far, growth continues to be strong, and the plants are gradually getting used to lower temps at night.

    @sollat that particular piece of mylar came from a cheap car windshield reflector i bought at the dollar store. i bought it about 4 years ago, so i'm not sure if they still sell them there. in other stores they're more expensive.

    this one was nice because it was easy to cut, and it had a plastic bubble wrap structure on the inside that would double as insulation.

    Let’s chat

    Do you feel you have less interest posting about politics / current events lately?

    Why?

    Do you notice the same responses over and over again?

    Do you feel headlines and events seem to go nowhere or seem to repeat?

    Do you think people are more polarized or less polarized?

    Are people beholden to their sides’ ideology— the kind of people where if you looked at their profile you would know exactly what they think on most issues without nuance?

    I just wanna hear where you’re at…

    @flexghost Mastodon is a lot better than most social media, but i still see polarization here. also in the news media, somewhat. it feels like it's no longer permissible to have a commonsense stance like 'let's wait for more information to come out about this complicated, very divisive issue before jumping to conclusions.' i.e. 'let's stop and think for a second.'

    people don't want to think. they want their favourite pundits to tell them what to think.

    1/… I'll ask a favor of you.

    This trial hasn't even started yet, not one witness. Yet...

    I'm getting Doomers galore in my feed.

    A Trumpy helped convict him in an earlier trial.

    The prosecutors are vetting the jurors carefully.

    I am not Dooming. Not yet.

    Can we wait for the trial to be in full swing before predicting the worst possible outcome? Or do people thrive on constant pessimism? I just don't.

    Thanks so much for listening. Let's try to be hopeful.

    More…

    ignova ,
    @ignova@mstdn.ca avatar

    @GottaLaff what i don't understand is why they're so smug about their own defeatist bedwetting. 'Poor rubes, thinking they have a reason to try things, and hope for things.'

    they're basically taking the coward's position of minimizing the risks of being wrong, at the cost of undermining morale for everyone who's actually trying to be useful. a warped commitment to losing on purpose.

    ignova ,
    @ignova@mstdn.ca avatar

    @crazyeddie @GottaLaff defeatism depresses morale overall & reduces the will to act. even if you can't affect the outcome of e.g. the Stormy Daniels case, there are other actions ppl can take against Trump, which they may not take if they sit around convincing each other it's all hopeless.

    if defeatism is just a private attitude, then whatever. you do you. but spreading this shit around has negative effects on other people, & ppl should think twice before polluting strangers' mentions with it.
