Today in Labor History June 19, 1903: Benito Mussolini, at the time a radical Socialist, was arrested by Bern police for advocating a violent general strike. As strange as it may seem, in light of his rise to become one of the most powerful and violent fascist leaders in the world, Mussolini came from a radical leftist background. In his youth, he idealized figures like Bakunin and Garibaldi. His father, who was a socialist, named him Benito, after Mexico’s liberal leader Benito Juarez. His two middle names, Andrea and Amilcare, were named after Italian socialists Andrea Costa and Amilcare Cipriani.

@MikeDunnAuthor fascism heavily derived from the syndicalist movement. another motivator was the antisemitism common in leftists of the time, Bakunin himself called Jews a horrible race etc. definitely seems strange but the conditions of the early 1900s and late 1800s really were strange

@DropBear Hamas was elected over a decade ago and elections havent been run since so not really democratic, most Gazans arent happy with their choice from a decade ago. But they are just as legitimate as the Israeli government.
I wouldnt argue Gaza has a Hamas problem though. Gaza's problem is Israel. Hamas is a reaction to Israel. If Israel isnt an issue, Hamas would dissolve as its support is based on liberation of Palestine

But painting it as the biggest death of Jews since the holocaust frames it as a throughline of anti-semitism, from the Nazis to the evil Hamas. But its not. Its a throughline of Israeli colonisation of Palestine. October 7th was entirely avoidable. By stopping the colonisation. Anti colonial violence wont end until someone wins, and I hope its the colonised that win.
