If you enjoyed my interview with @bgzimmer last week about crossword puzzles, check out his Crossword Craze website.

The most recent post is about Simon and Schuster trying to hide their identity as the publishers of the first "novelty" crossword books, but being discovered by "Publisher's Weekly" after the books became runaway bestsellers.

What words do you think capture the zeitgeist of the year so far?

We're about halfway through 2024 (ack!), so I want to get a jump on collecting candidates for the word-of-the-year vote in December.

What do you think the 2024 word of the year should be?

After a long morning of loading the POD, stuffing the car, cleaning, scrubbing, double-checking, all on very little sleep… we’re off! here we come.

Any "Dune" fans here?

Tomorrow I'm interviewing big-time audiobook narrator Scott Brick, who narrates the "Dune" books, and Kevin J. Anderson who has written many "Dune" books.

Do you have any questions you'd like me to ask them (I'm especially interested in questions about the language of "Dune").

House hunting in remotely with our twins as our eyes, ears, using FaceTime is... novel.

It sure beats driving 1200 miles on a whim like we did a month ago.

grammargirl ,
@grammargirl@zirk.us avatar

@GottaLaff We've done that a few times, often asking, "What does it smell like?"

Shocking news today that Dictionary.com has laid off all its lexicographers.

I already had a line in next week's podcast about dictionaries being a tough industry, and now it's even more true.

Some great company should hire them all; they're a real dream team

Check out @korystamper, @grantbarrett, John Kelly and more.

They're posting at LinkedIn. https://www.linkedin.com/posts/john-kelly-content_dictionarycom-meanings-definitions-of-activity-7184630769942695936-r6Vr?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_desktop

Via Will: "When a cargo ship took out a #Baltimore bridge, it also demolished the lies poisoning our #immigration debate

The 6 migrant men who died weren't drug dealers or sex traffickers but hero dads filling potholes to give their kids a better life.

This column meant more to me than anything I've written for a while. Here's an excerpt. Please take a moment to read the whole thing."

@GottaLaff @willbunch Thanks, Laffy. Do you know if there's a GoFundMe for the families?

Since a lot of people are talking about what they were doing four years ago, I opened my old calendar.

Four years ago today, I wrote down "Pat got coughed on."

@drwhitt Interesting. That feels a little early to me.

I also remember that we were freaking out hoping huge crowds didn't come to town for March Madness. (We lived in Reno, and it's always a big event for the casinos.)

@drwhitt I work from home, so I guess that part of it wasn't as significant a difference in my life. I have no specific, date-based memory of when the people I know who do go into offices stopped.

Here's a handy guide to check yourself against; which way do you display/store/shelve your ?

I have so many that I fit a number of different categories depending on which part of he house you're in.... I doubt I'm alone in my pluralist shelving habits

My podcast is called "Grammar Girl's Quick and Dirty Tips for Better Writing." You can find various links to it here: https://pod.link/173429229

"The Endless Knot" (@AllEndlessKnot) and "Lexitecture" podcasts both talk about word origins.

Coincidentally, I saw a respected editor post about the word "curate" on LinkedIn today: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/rewriting-zombies-curate-reveal-erin-brenner-wgn2e/

I like it, and it has an interesting parallel with "parenting."

I actually talked about it in my TEDx talk a few years ago. This link will take you right to that part of the talk if you're interested:
