If you enjoyed my interview with @bgzimmer last week about crossword puzzles, check out his Crossword Craze website.

The most recent post is about Simon and Schuster trying to hide their identity as the publishers of the first "novelty" crossword books, but being discovered by "Publisher's Weekly" after the books became runaway bestsellers.

What words do you think capture the zeitgeist of the year so far?

We're about halfway through 2024 (ack!), so I want to get a jump on collecting candidates for the word-of-the-year vote in December.

What do you think the 2024 word of the year should be?

@grammargirl I hate to say it because I’m already tired of hearing it, but “enshittification” feels important, in the context of tech companies (and others) making their services and products worse to try to extract more money from people.

@pluralistic has written a lot about this and maybe coined the word.

@stephenjbell @grammargirl @pluralistic it’s got to be enshittification. Hell, got dropped at my last department meeting.

Any "Dune" fans here?

Tomorrow I'm interviewing big-time audiobook narrator Scott Brick, who narrates the "Dune" books, and Kevin J. Anderson who has written many "Dune" books.

Do you have any questions you'd like me to ask them (I'm especially interested in questions about the language of "Dune").

I read he wrote an article about the Oregon Dunes in Florence, Oregon, and got “over involved.

Paper mills! Ack!

So your long experience in the PNW, where Herbert is from, lived and wrote much of the Dune series, points in the direction of a possible “smellscape” that impacted his stories?

There’s a great question in there.

How/where did the intense industrial smells of the PNW during the 60s-70s influence the Dune series?

Is that close?

Shocking news today that Dictionary.com has laid off all its lexicographers.

I already had a line in next week's podcast about dictionaries being a tough industry, and now it's even more true.

Some great company should hire them all; they're a real dream team

Check out @korystamper, @grantbarrett, John Kelly and more.

They're posting at LinkedIn. https://www.linkedin.com/posts/john-kelly-content_dictionarycom-meanings-definitions-of-activity-7184630769942695936-r6Vr?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_desktop

Since a lot of people are talking about what they were doing four years ago, I opened my old calendar.

Four years ago today, I wrote down "Pat got coughed on."

@drwhitt I work from home, so I guess that part of it wasn't as significant a difference in my life. I have no specific, date-based memory of when the people I know who do go into offices stopped.
